Youth Scene: CBA earns two quality wins

Crescent Bay Advisors won a pair of Majors division games last week against two tough opponents, defeating Rotary, 1-0, and VFW, 9-4, in Laguna Beach Little League action at Riddle Field.

CBA's Charlie Pillsbury pitched a gem, striking out 11 while only allowing two hits and two walks, in the shutout win over first-place Rotary. Hits strung together by Gavin Trevino, Wyatt Gillespie and Peyton Francisco in the fifth inning, scratched across the game's lone run.

Rotary had excellent pitching from Brooks Hogenauer, Paxton Burzell and Nolan Smith.

On Saturday, Pillsbury led off the first inning with a three-run home run, then the bats of teammates heated up in the 9-4 win over VFW. Pillsbury finished with three hits, with three hits and Trevino, Caden Capobianco and Hayden Myers each had two hits.

Jack Payne started on the mount for CBA and pitched two solid innings while Nolan Naess finished the game with four innings of relief.

Max Schuster and Trey Lockhart hit home runs to power the VFW offense.

Hobie 16, Rotary 16

A three-hour battle April 4 between second-place Hobie and division leader Rotary ended in a tie score.

The game at Riddle Field was highlighted by a three-run home run by Hobie's Jeremy Hayes and a three-run triple by Rotary's George Williams. Hobie's Jamie Mackay served up a three-RBI triple in the top of the sixth to put Hobie up one run. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Rotary's Paxton Burzell hit a double and Josh Meiswinkle singled to bring home Burzell with the tying run.

Hobie's Lance Detweiler dug in on the mound to get the final two outs to preserve the tie.

In AAA Division action:

UPS 5, McKenna BMW 4

UPS rallied from a four-run deficit and scored three runs in the final inning Saturday to upend first-place McKenna BMW.

UPS, third in the division, gained ground of McKenna BMW in the standings with the win. It wasn't until the fourth inning that UPS managed a base runner against the strong pitching performance of Luke Machin. Jax Laluotte broke up the perfect game in the fourth with a single but after four, McKenna BMW led, 4-0, behind the excellent hitting of Griffin Naess, Alex Neufeld and Luke Machin.

In the fifth, UPS finally got on the scoreboard on an Aidan McDennon lead-off double and an RBI single by Kai Gillies. Trailing, 4-2, heading into the sixth, UPS would not be denied, scoring two runs on a double by McDennon and another on a walk-off by Sam Schineller to finish the comeback.

Schineller also earned the win on the mound by throwing three, strong shutout innings.

AA Division

McKenna Audi 9, La Sirena Grill 8

McKenna Audi beat La Sirena Grill in an exciting game that came down to the last out.

In the bottom of the final inning, McKenna Audi came to bat down 8-7. After two strikeouts to start the inning, McKenna rallied to win the game on a clutch, two-run, walk-off single by Sam Burchi (two for three, three RBIs). In addition to Burchi, McKenna's offense was highlighted by James Dechary, Camden Dowers (both reached base in each of their three plate appearances) and Micah Chavez (triple, three RBIs). Luke Bruderer and Lucas McKibben also hit safely for McKenna.

Dowers gave a solid pitching performance while Chavez (2 2/3 innings, four strikeouts) was stellar in keeping the usually hot La Sirena bats at bay.

La Sirena, the second-place team in the division got strong pitching efforts from Redmond Chesley and Ben Dawson (two innings, two hits, four strikeouts) to keep the game within reach. La Sirena's offense was led by Chesley (hit, three RBIs), Dawson (hit, RBI) and Luke Fetzer (hit, two RBIs).

La Sirena Grill 13, Bushard's Pharmacy 5

La Sirena Grill prevailed over Bushard's in a hard-fought battle that went four innings.

La Sirena was led by the hitting of Jackson Baldwin (two for two, triple, two RBIs), Redmond Chesley (two for two, triple, two RBIs), Jackson Lawsky (two for two, RBI), Ben Dawson (two for two, three RBIs), Zade Harrison (hit, two RBIs), and Cade Anderton (triple, two RBIs).

Anderton (five strikeouts, no walks) and Chesley performed well on the mound with Chesley highlighting the effort by striking out five of the six batters he faced.

Bushard's received solid pitching efforts from Jackson Rowley, Gavin Genske and Will Goodwin to keep them in the game. Bushard's offensive attack was lead by Rowley, Goodwin, Michael Watts, Christopher Hemsley, Dylan Zevnik and Hayden Farrington, each of whom hit safely.
