Seniors honored with ROP scholarship

Two Laguna Beach High School seniors were among a select group of South Coast Regional Occupational Program scholarship winners announced at a ceremony Tuesday night at San Juan Hills High in San Juan Capistrano.

Dylan Augenstein and Marlena Becker, along with nine other students, were named distinguished students from among 64 nominees for their performance during the 2014-15 school year, according to a news release.

Laguna Beach High is one of seven schools in the South Coast ROP, which offers more than 50 career and technical education courses.

ROP instructors nominated students based on their character, attitude, attendance, skills acquired and community involvement. A panel of judges interviewed the nominees and selected the 11 scholarship winners.

Augenstein and Aliso Niguel High student Mackenzie Daw were named Overall Most Distinguished Students. Becker earned the Career Pathway Award in the arts and design category.

Augenstein was the only student nominated in two categories — fire technology and multimedia. He recently passed the exam for aspiring emergency medical technicians, the release says. He works beach patrol for the Laguna Beach Police Department and will attend the fire academy this winter in hopes of becoming a paramedic.

Becker participates in classical dance, Laguna Beach High’s highest dance level, and is often the lead in the school’s musicals, the release says. She will be a musical theater major at UCLA in the fall.
