City of Costa Mesa shares tips on coyotes

The city of Costa Mesa issued recommendations this week for avoiding coyote encounters.

Officials advise fencing animal enclosures, feeding pets indoors, storing trash in covered heavy-duty containers, enclosing the bottoms of porches and eliminating potential food and water sources such as fallen fruit and standing water.

Though coyotes generally hunt between sunset and sunrise, they can be observed at all hours of the day, officials said.

Residents who see injured or potentially dangerous coyotes can call Costa Mesa Police Department dispatch at (714) 754-5252. For general inquiries, Costa Mesa Animal Control Services can be reached at (714) 754-5311.
