Newport Beach is launching into spring with two free events this month to help residents with their gardens.
The city and CR&R Environmental Services will present a compost giveaway from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oasis Senior Center, 801 Narcissus Ave. Residents can receive two 30-pound bags of organic compost.
On April 21, the city will offer a free class on how to transform landscapes into gardens that thrive in the California climate. Guests will learn how to build a living soil sponge, select the correct plants for certain areas of their gardens, use rainwater instead of potable water and manage irrigation systems in the most efficient manner.
The class will be from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Civic Center Community Room, 100 Civic Center Drive.
Reservations are required and can be made through the city website, newportbeachca.gov, or by calling (949) 644-3195.
