Newport Beach police will enhance DUI patrols this weekend

Newport Beach police will be on enhanced lookout for alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers this Presidents Day weekend as part of a saturation patrol effort.

Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday and ending at 3 a.m. the next day, officers will be patrolling areas of the city with the highest frequency of DUI crashes and arrests, according to the Police Department. Authorities did not specify the locations.

In the past three years, Newport Beach police have investigated 373 DUI-related crashes in the city, which have resulted in four deaths and 303 injuries, according to a news release.

The saturation patrols are funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
