All-League Boys’ Basketball: CdM’s Kobrine, Ctvrtlik first-teamers

Corona del Mar High senior guard Sam Kobrine and senior forward Matt Ctvrtlik made the All-Pacific Coast League first team for helping the boys’ basketball team to a share of second place in league.

Kobrine, a UCLA men’s volleyball commit, averaged 14 points, five rebounds, 2.5 steals and one block per game.

Ctvrtlik, who is heading to Harvard to play volleyball, averaged 14.3 points, eight rebounds, 1.9 three-pointers and one steal per game.

The Sea Kings (20-9, 6-4 in league), who split second in league with Beckman, advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3A playoffs, losing at San Gabriel Gabrielino, 55-54.

CdM sophomore forward Taeveon Le was a second-team pick.

Northwood senior forward Jake Linsky earned the Pacific Coast League MVP award.

Newport’s Stassel, Phillips earn first-team status

Newport Harbor High senior guard Charlie Stassel and senior forward Brandon Phillips garnered first-team All-Sunset League honors in boys’ basketball for lifting the Sailors to second place in league for the first time in eight years.

Stassel and Phillips led Newport Harbor (21-8, 6-4 in league) to its seventh 20-win season in the program’s history. The Sailors lost at Perris, 52-44, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Stassel averaged 15.5 points and 2.6 steals per game, and shot 45% from the field, 35% from three-point range and 70% from the free-throw line.

Phillips averaged 9.4 points and six rebounds per game, and shot 55% from the field.

Newport Harbor senior forward Nate Harding was on the second team.

Los Alamitos senior guard Eyassu Worku, a UC Irvine commit, was named the Sunset League MVP.

Mesa’s Tufuga, Calderon honored

Costa Mesa High senior center Mason Tufuga and senior guard Chris Calderon each earned All-Orange Coast League first-team accolades in boys’ basketball for leading the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in league.

Tufuga, a repeat first-team selection, averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game.

The host Mustangs (15-13, 8-2 in league) lost to JSerra, 77-62, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs.

The second team included Estancia junior guard Evan Pettingill and Costa Mesa senior guard Calvin Ko.

Estancia (11-17, 1-9) failed to qualify for the Division 4AA playoffs after placing last in league.

Blake Burzell, a sophomore forward from Laguna Beach, was the Orange Coast League MVP.

Sage Hill’s Kuehnel makes first team

Sage Hill School senior center Chance Kuehnel made the first team All-Academy League in boys’ basketball.

Kuehnel averaged 15.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game in league play.

The Lightning finished 16-9 overall, placed third in league at 8-4, and lost at Panorama City St. Genevieve, 77-49, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs.

Sage Hill junior guards Dominic Sadeghi and Greg Park were second-team selections, while senior guard Alfonso Corona was an honorable mention.

Crean Lutheran junior guard Michael Bagatourian is the Academy League MVP.
