College Roundup: UCI falls to Pepperdine

Pepperdine def. UC Irvine

MALIBU — Senior Kevin Tillie finished with 15 kills for the No. 2-ranked Anteaters in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match that No. 4 Pepperdine won, 26-28, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20, on Tuesday.

UCI fell to 16-5, 13-5 in MPSF play. Pepperdine improved to 11-6, 10-6 in conference.

UCI’s Connor Hughes recorded 13 kills and four total blocks. Collin Mehring had six blocks.

The Anteaters are at No. 14 USC on Friday at 7 p.m.

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 2, Saddleback 0

COSTA MESA — Freshman David Wilson pitched seven shutout innings and three OCC pitchers combined on the three-hit home shutout in Orange Empire Conference play on Tuesday.

Wilson allowed three hits, struck out six and did not walk a batter to improve to 4-1.

David Longville and Joe Reta each worked an inning of relief to help OCC improve to 15-6, 3-3 in conference.

Austin Saenz and Anthony Virgen each drove in a run for the Pirates, who had just six hits against two Gauchos pitchers.

Saddleback is 11-6, 2-4.

Concordia 2, Vanguard 1 (11 innings)

COSTA MESA — The host Lions scored an unearned run in the first inning, but were blanked from there in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Monday.

Thomas Mobley went two for three and scored for Vanguard (12-11, 6-11 in conference), which managed just five hits off two pitchers.

Travis Tomsen did not allow a run in eight innings for Vanguard, giving up six hits and striking out four.

Concordia improved to 9-19, 12-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 5, Marquette 2

IRVINE — Kristina Smith and Ali Facey won in singles and doubles to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference match on Monday.

Smith won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Franziska Goettsching to win at No. 1 doubles.

Facey won at No. 4 singles and teamed with Brooke Schweyer for a victory at No. 2 doubles.

UCI is 11-3, while Marquette fell to 9-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Long Beach State

LONG BEACH — Senior outside hitter Kevin Tillie had a season-high 23 kills to go with nine digs to lead the visiting Anteaters to a 25-23, 29-27, 23-25, 25-22, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Saturday.

The No. 2-ranked Anteaters were also led by junior outside hitter Jeremy Dejno tied his season best with 21 kills.

Junior setter Daniel Stork tied had a season-high 62 assists for UCI.

No. 3-ranked Long Beach State is 14-5, 12-4.
