High School Roundup: CdM can't finish on road

BELLFLOWER — The Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team won the first two sets but couldn't finish in its CIF Southern Section Division 1 second-round match at Bellflower St. John Bosco Thursday night.

The Braves (24-9) rallied for a 21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 17-15 victory.

Tommy Brooks had 15 kills on 23 attempts with five blocks and no hitting errors for CdM (19-11).

Augie Miller added 15 kills and three blocks, Eric Ctvrtlik had 14 digs and Ryan Moss had 11 kills for the Sea Kings, the Pacific Coast League champions.

"Both our middles played great [Brooks and Miller]," CdM Coach Steve Conti said in a telephone interview. "We certainly had some chances. We couldn't make some plays when we needed to make the plays for the most part.

The team has come a long way since the beginning of the season, but you still have to play better along the way and be able to finish. Game 5 was a see-saw, back and forth. It was a battle. We're a very young team. Playing on the road, we just weren't able to make the plays we needed to make."
