Sports Roundup: Flintridge Prep boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams dominate at Mt. SAC Invitational

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Flintridge Prep, La Cañada, St. Francis, Hoover at Mount San Antonio College Invitational: It was another spectacular effort for the Rebels, who won the Division V team and individual championship on Friday.

Flintridge Prep crushed Lancaster Desert Christian, 31-97, behind a winning effort from reigning All-Area Runner of the Year Jack Van Scoter.

The senior won with a blistering time of 14 minutes, 45 seconds and paced a squad with Evan Pattinelli (fifth, 15:46), Jonathan Vahala (seventh, 15:58), Riley Coan (10th, 16:04) and Rab Moran (12th, 16:18).

St. Francis placed sixth in the Division IV blue race with 186 points in a contest won by Mission League stalwart Harvard-Westlake, which tallied 58 points.

Golden Knights senior Christian Rodriguez was his team’s No. 1 runner, earning 17th in 17:13, while senior Ryan Hambley was 32nd (17:40), junior Charles Mayne took 44th (18:07) and Michael Vega placed 52nd (18:18).

Cross-town rival La Cañada did not field a complete team, but did possess the top runner as sophomore Ethan Crane took 13th in 17:06.

The Hoover boys took 18th in the Division III red race with 456 points in race won by La Sierra (38 points) and received a top-50 effort from junior Chris Chereque, who was 33rd (17:23).

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, La Cañada, Hoover at Mount San Antonio College Invitational: It was a banner afternoon for the Rebels, who captured the Division V sweepstakes in stunning fashion.

The Rebels crushed runner-up Sacred Heart of Jesus, 38-144, and had its scoring five finish in the top 15.

Junior Natalie O’Brien was brilliant again in placing second in 18 minutes 56 seconds, while sophomore transfer Sophie Gitlin took fourth in 19:05.

Sasha Codiga followed for the Rebels in eighth (19:26), as did Maia Cohen (ninth, 19:34) and Jenna Mijares (15th, 19:57).

One the more intriguing match-ups took place in the Division IV green race as Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy took on a field that included La Cañada High.

The Spartans did best, taking second with 100 points, and were edged out by Tahoe Truckee (86 points). The Tologs were 12th with 314 points.

Spartans sophomore Katie Scoville, a reigning All-Area runner, was stellar again in taking second in 18 minutes, 38 seconds, well behind Arizona Rio Rico’s Allie Schadler (17:15), but comfortably ahead of third-place finisher Nikesha Eagleman (19:16) of Chinle, Ariz.

La Cañada’s scoring five all placed in the top 35 and consisted of freshman Adena DiPaolo (14th, 20:17), Kallie Rushing (25th, 20:54), Morgan Bowman (27th, 20:58) and Zoe Hale (32nd, 21:01).

Tologs sophomore Bobbie Byrne continued her strong season by placing 43rd in 21:16, while freshman teammate Kiley Wilson was 52nd in 21:38.

Hoover competed in the Division III green race and was led by Leah Saunders, who placed 60th in 22:55.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

San Gabriel Mission 3, Holy Family 0: The visiting Gaels saw San Gabriel Mission register a 25-6, 25-11, 25-17 Horizon League win Thursday. Holy Family dipped to 2-14, 0-8 in league.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Wilson in Mission League individual final: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Ally Wilson carded a 21-over-par 93 on Thursday at River Ridge Golf Club’s Vineyard Course in Oxnard. Wilson finished 15th overall with a two-round score of 186 after opening with a 93 on Tuesday at the same venue.
