The contents of Dana Point Harbor’s 50-year-old time capsule were unveiled Monday evening at a public ceremony at Baby Beach.

The items, which were gathered in 1966 as work to create a harbor was getting underway, included articles from a local newspaper; a Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts souvenir program; preliminary design plans for the Dana Point Harbor; letters to the future from the Dana Point Music Guild, the Dana Point Civic Assn. and the San Clemente-Capistrano Valley Board of Realtors; and newsletters, photographs and organizational documents from local chapters of the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, American Gold Star Mothers, Daughters of the American Revolution and other groups.

Barbara Johannes, president of the Dana Point Historical Society, which co-sponsored the event, estimated that 1,500 people attended Monday’s program.

“It was like a second beginning for Dana Point,” Johannes said of the harbor groundbreaking, commemorated with the time capsule. “In 1966, they were very much aware that this was going to be a game changer for Dana Point — and it was.”

The container also included a program from the rock-placing ceremony.

A program of Monday’s event will similarly be included in a new Dana Point Harbor time capsule, which is expected to be created within the next couple of years to coincide with planned commercial renovations at the harbor.
