867-pound pumpkin is greatest of them all at Irvine weigh-off

If Linus of the “Peanuts” gang had visited Tanaka Farms on Sunday, he would have seen more Great Pumpkins than he’d have known what do with.

The Irvine fruit and vegetable farm presented Pumpkinmania, featuring a giant pumpkin weigh-off.

Area growers competed for $1,800 in cash and other prizes for having the heaviest pumpkin, the funniest-shaped, the best-colored and more.

The weigh-off winner was an 867-pounder entered by Torrance resident Chris Dunn. If you’re curious, the Guinness world record for heaviest pumpkin was set last year by a Swiss farmer who grew one that tipped the scale at 2,323 pounds.

If you still need a pumpkin for Halloween – or maybe for Thanksgiving – Tanaka Farms’ pumpkin patch continues from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily through Saturday, including wagon rides, a corn maze and a petting zoo at 5380 University Drive.
