Huntington Beach to appeal public records case to state Supreme Court

Share

The Huntington Beach City Council voted unanimously Monday night to file an appeal to the California Supreme Court over lower courts’ decisions in a case involving public disclosure of job applications.

John Briscoe, an Ocean View School District trustee, sued the city in January 2017 to try to gain access to various city records, particularly job applications for employees working in trash disposal. He wanted to see the qualifications for people overseeing a waste disposal facility across from Oak View Elementary School.

He was denied the records, with the city attorney’s office calling the applications private.

An Orange County Superior Court judge sided with Briscoe in November. The city challenged that decision, but a state appellate court declined to review the case last month.
