Mailbag: Monarch column set a ‘lovely tone for the day’

Re: David Hansen’s column, “Monarchs in need of human help,” Feb. 12:

I am in care of my two grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, daily.

One of our very special joys is watching the monarchs grow from scary looking caterpillars into beautiful butterflies. We keep several pots of milkweed for this purpose.

We watch each step with a wonderful interest. Last year we set up monarch homes — netting surrounding the milkweed plants. We were able to enjoy all stages and then set them free once their wings were dry.

This is something I never did as a child, but I am enjoying it so much now. Thank you for the needed attention to keeping the monarch thriving.

The column caught my eye at 7:30 a.m. and set a lovely tone for the day.
