College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball stuns UCLA

UC Irvine def. UCLA

LOS ANGELES — The visiting No. 12-ranked Anteaters stunned the No. 2-ranked Bruins, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, 20-18, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation thriller on Thursday.

Senior outside hitter Kyle Russell led the winners with a career-high 21 kills, 11 digs and three aces, and was in on seven blocks. Russell hit .325 to help the Anteaters (4-8, 3-7 in conference), who had lost six of their previous seven matches, hit .315 as a team, 63 points better than UCLA (11-2, 7-2).

Senior middle blocker Jason Agopian had a career-best 13 kills and hit .409 and was in on five blocks, while senior middle blocker Marty Ross was in on a team-best eight blocks and added seven kills.

Thomas Hodges had six kills, including the final two points of the match.

Freshman Dante Chakravorti had 49 assists and David Parker added 10 digs for UCI, which played without senior All-American Tamir Hershko, veteran setter Michael Saeta and starting libero Dillon Hoffman due to injuries.

UCLA, coached by former UCI head man John Speraw, topped the ‘Eaters, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23 in Irvine on Jan. 15.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 73, Riverside 60

Kyle Lawson had 18 points to lead three Pirates in double figures in the Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.

Lawson made seven of 12 field-goal attempts to help OCC finish at 49.1% from the field (26 for 53).

Jumoke Walker had 15 points, five assists, six steals and four rebounds for the winners, for whom Jamaal Lee had 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

OCC (10-15, 4-7 in conference) won the turnover battle, 22-10, in its final home game.

Riverside is 11-16, 3-8.

William Jessup 76, Vanguard 73

ROCKLIN — Senior Jaamon Echols had 25 points to pace the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.

Brandon Brothers and Christian Ware-Barry added 14 points apiece for Vanguard (15-8, 4-7 in conference).

William Jessup (17-7, 9-4) shot 50% from the field.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 46, William Jessup 43

ROCKLIN — Senior Melissa Norman had 16 points and 15 rebounds and her layup with 50 seconds left for the visiting Lions finalized the scoring in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Thursday.

Senior Samantha Doucette added 15 points for the winners (17-4, 9-2 in conference).

Vanguard survived shooting just 30% from the field and 16.7% from three-point range by limiting the hosts to 31.6% shooting from the field and posting a 48-37 rebounding edge.

Vanguard lost the turnover battle, 17-16.

William Jessup is 14-11, 5-8.

UC Santa Barbara 80, UC Irvine 62

Mokun Fajemisin had 14 points and six rebounds to pace the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Thursday.

UCSB (9-15, 6-4 in conference), shot 54.4% from the field (31 for 57) and was 16 for 19 from the foul line.

UCI (4-20, 1-9) had 22 of the game’s 39 turnovers.
