BASEBALL

Orange Coast 11, Canyons 3

Jake Gozzo went two for three with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the host Pirates in the nonconference game Saturday.

McKinley LeFore allowed three runs over seven innings to improve to 4-0 for OCC (12-2).

Eric Wagaman, Travis Moniot and Robert Teel were all two for three for the Pirates.

Canyons is 7-5.

Golden West 8, Glendale 3

GLENDALE — Zakk Morgan was three for five with two runs batted in and Jake Hinzo had two hits and two RBIs for the visiting Rustlers in the nonconference game Saturday.

Myles Moran and Nick Tingrides had two hits and Louie Canjura had two RBIs for the Rustlers (6-9).

Adam Moses earned the win in relief.

Glendale is 10-3.

San Diego 14, UC Irvine 6

SAN DIEGO — Freshman Christian Koss was two for four with four runs batted in to lead the Anteaters in the Tony Gwynn Classis on Saturday at San Diego.

Keston Hiura and Adam Alcantara were both two for four as Alcantara extended his hitting streak to 22 games.

Louis Raymond allowed six runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning and Alonzo Garcia allowed four runs on four hits in one inning for UCI, which fell to 3-3.

USD improved to 3-2.

Tennessee 10, UC Irvine 9

SAN DIEGO — Keston Hiura was two for three with a home run and three runs batted in for the Anteaters in their final game at the Tony Gwynn Classis on Saturday at the University of San Diego.

Mikey Duarte was three for four and scored three runs, while Evan Cassolato was three for five with three runs for UCI (3-4).

Adrian Damla was two for three with one RBI for UCI.

The game was halted after eight innings due to conserve pitching.

Hiura, a preseason All-American, is batting .444 with four homers and 15 RBIs.

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept San Diego Christian in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Sophomore Tyler Steele threw a complete-game, seven-inning one-hit shutout in the second game, a 2-0 win for the No. 20-ranked Lions. Steele, now 5-0, struck out six and walked three.

Shane Elias-Calles had the lone run batted in in the second game.

In Game 1, Vanguard prevailed, 10-4, as Josh Weeks went three for three with three RBIs and Trai Patrick was two for four with a homer and two RBIs.

Chris Lumanlan allowed one run and four hits in six innings to improve to 3-1. He struck out eight.

Vanguard is 13-7, 8-1 in conference.

San Diego Christian is 3-10, 2-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Santa Barbara

Tamir Hershko had 19 kills and hit .417 to lead the host Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday at Crawford Court.

Thomas Hodges had 14 kills and hit .370, while Scott Stadick had 13 kills and eight block assists for the winners (11-5, 8-4 in conference).

Michael Saeta added 48 assists, five kills and five block assists for UCI.

UCSB is 7-9, 4-9.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Barbara Kalbus Invitational

UC Irvine rebounded from a 16-1 drubbing by UCLA to earn a 9-8 win over Hawaii on Saturday at UCI.

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters (9-5) meet No. 5-ranked Arizona State in the fifth-place game on Sunday at 10:15 a.m.

Mary Brooks and Kelsey Thornton had three goals apiece and Jenna Phreaner had 11 saves for UCI against Hawaii.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 67, The Master’s 46

Senior Claire Lamunu had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season finale on Saturday.

No. 3-ranked Vanguard, the outright GSAC champion, is 27-2, 15-1 in conference.

The Master’s is 20-7, 10-6.

Long Beach State 87, UC Irvine 74

LONG BEACH — Andee Ritter had 21 points and Irene Chavez added 20 to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Ritter was six for 12 from three-point range and Chavez was six for 11 beyond the arc to help UCI (4-24, 2-12 in conference) shoot 45.5% from threedom (15 for 33).

Brooke Bayman had 13 points and matched Chaves with five assists.

The 49ers are 20-9, 11-3.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 85, Vanguard 76

Needing a win to qualify for the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament, the host Lions led much of the game and were ahead, 69-67, with 4:56 left.

But the No. 18-ranked Mustangs rallied to win and improve to 23-4, 12-4 in conference.

Vanguard finishes 7-23, 5-11.

Shacquille Dawkins led the Lions with 15 points, followed by Brandon Wood with 14 and Zach Allmon with 13.
