The 41st year of Irrelevant Week will feature the inaugural Paul Salata Award next week during the three-day event in Newport Beach.

Longtime Corona del Mar High cross country and track and field coach Bill Sumner will receive the award named after the legendary Irrelevant Week and Mr. Irrelevant founder at the Lowsman Trophy Banquet Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Newport Beach Marriott.

Sumner, the director of Cal Coast Track Club, is also in charge of Magic Shoe, a charity that donates free shoes to children to stay active or compete.

Sumner, in his 33rd year at CdM, has coached countless elite athletes. He guided CdM girls’ cross country teams to seven CIF state championships (tying a state record) and the boys to two. He has 15 CIF section titles combined from boys’ and girls’ cross country and track and field.

Tennessee Titans cornerback Kalan Reed is Mr. Irrelevant XLI. He’ll be roasted and toasted for being the final pick of the NFL Draft during the banquet and will receive the Lowsman Trophy.

Tickets for the event are available online at irrelevantweek.com.

Reed will be the center of attention on June 4, when he’ll start his day in the Corona del Mar Scenic 5K at 7 a.m.

He’ll be at a beach party on 30th Street on Newport Peninsula at 10 a.m. and then off to lunch at Cruisers at 1:30 p.m. He’ll then lead a pub crawl throughout Newport Beach in search of Miss Irrelevant 2016, which will be a winner of a contest at Blue Beet on Saturday night.

Reed will end Irrelevant Week on June 5 at the Balboa Island Parade with Salata at 11 a.m.
