CdM’s Haly named co-MVP

Corona del Mar High senior middle blocker Mitch Haly shared the Pacific Coast League MVP award after leading the boys’ volleyball team to an undefeated Pacific Coast League title, a CIF Southern Section Division 1 title and the CIF Southern California Regional Division I finals.

Haly highlights one of five CdM players on the first team. The others are junior outside hitter Brandon Browning, junior setter Patrick Paragas, senior middle blocker Jake Meyer and senior outside hitter Clay Dickinson.

The quintet led CdM (33-4, 10-0 in league) to its 15th consecutive league crown, its third consecutive trip to the section finals, and its fourth consecutive appearance in a SoCal Regional final.

The No. 3-seeded Sea Kings swept No. 1 Los Angeles Loyola 25-22, 32-30, 26-24 in the section championship match, claiming the top division for the first time since 2000.

In the SoCal Regional finale, No. 1 CdM lost to No. 2 Loyola in three sets.

Haly, a two-time first-team selection, finished with 187 kills and 74 total blocks.

Haly, who is heading to USC, split the MVP award with Beckman senior outside hitter Spencer Olivier.

Browning, a USC commit, totaled 259 kills, 24 total blocks, 74 digs and 25 service aces.

Paragas amassed 1,009 assists, and had 46 kills, 27½ total blocks, 116 digs and 38 aces.

Meyer produced 194 kills and 47 total blocks.

Dickinson, a USC signee, recorded 244 kills, 32½ total blocks, 40 digs and 18 aces.

CdM junior opposite Kevin Kobrine, a UCLA commit, and junior libero Diego Perez made the second team.
