College Roundup: VU women’s basketball edges The Master’s

Vanguard 75, The Master’s 68 (OT)

SANTA CLARITA – Senior Claire Lamunu had 29 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots to help the visiting No. 5-ranked Lions prevail in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

It was the ninth straight double-double for the 6-foot-1 Lamunu, who leads the NAIA in scoring (24.4 per game) and is second nationally in rebounding (13.9 per contest).

Kandyce Smith made a layup with 44 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then scored nine of the Lions’ 11 points in the extra session to finish with 18 points on six-for-nine shooting from the field.

Vanguard, which has won 13 straight, is 17-1, 5-0 in GSAC play.

The Master’s is 12-5, 2-4.

BASEBALL

Vanguard 14, La Sierra 5

The host No. 20-ranked Lions opened the season by rallying from deficits of 4-0 and 5-1 in the nonconference home game Monday.

Junior second baseman Michael Fuchs, a transfer from Golden West College, was five for five with one run batted in.

Sophomore designated hitter Hunter White was three for five with three RBIs and one home run, while senior leadoff man Brandon Sandoval was three for five with two RBIs and three runs for the winners.

Sophomore Tyler Steele, one of five Vanguard relievers that did not allow a run, earned the win with three innings of one-hit ball.

Vanguard (1-0) returns to action Jan. 27 against visiting Benedictine University.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 93, Vanguard 72

SANTA CLARITA – Zach Allmon and Brandon Hood led the visiting Lions with 17 points apiece in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Allmon had a team-best eight rebounds and was eight for 14 from the field.

The Lions are 14-5, 3-2 in conference, while The Master’s us 14-3, 3-3.
