High School Roundup: Edison boys’ soccer eliminated from playoffs

Redlands East Valley 1, Edison 0

The Chargers’ season ended after losing in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Saturday.

Edison fell to 20-5-1. Redlands East Valley, the No. 2 seed, advanced to play against Palos Verdes in the semifinals.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

Estancia High opened the season with two wins, 17-2, and 8-1 over Covina Gladstone.

Jake McIntyre was three for three with a dobuel, three runs batted in, three runs scored and two stolen bases in the Eagles’ season-opening win. Colin Gardner, Jeff Alai, Nic Mazur and Trevor Brown had two hits each during Estancia’s 17-hit attack.

Jake Covey was two for four with three RBIs and a run in Estancia’s second win.

Doubleheader

Newport Harbor split its doubleheader with Esperanza to open the season on Saturday.

The Sailors (1-1) won the first game, 5-2, and lost the second game, 2-1.

John Olmstead, Matt Weiss, Zach Montgomery and Kyle Carmack had two hits each. Carmack produced a double and two RBIs.

Doubleheader

Sage Hill School opened the season with two shutouts, beating Rubidoux, 7-0, and 11-0.

Brett Super struck out 11 and walked one during his one-hit shutout in the opener.

Edward Pelc had three hits, three walks and six stolen bases in the second game, which saw pitcher Ashwin Chona strike out 12 and walk two in his one-hit shutout.
