High School Roundup: Barela leads Newport Harbor boys’ basketball past Fountain Valley

Junior guard Sam Barela finished with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists, leading the Newport Harbor High boys’ basketball team to a 56-39 win at Fountain Valley in a Sunset League game on Wednesday night.

The Sailors (14-4, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 12 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A poll, have a first-place battle in league at Edison (12-5, 2-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Chargers swept the two-game series last season, edging Newport Harbor 75-70 in overtime and 62-60.

The Sailors last won at Edison in the 2007-08 season.

Newport Harbor’s Zack Swies had 10 points against the Barons (6-11, 0-2), while Dayne Chalmers added nine.

Edison 48, Los Alamitos 32: Senior forward Spencer Serven led the visiting Chargers with 20 points in a Sunset League game on Wednesday.

Edison and Los Alamitos shared the league title last season.

David Atencio had 11 points for the Chargers (12-5, 2-0 in league).

Laguna Beach 57, Godinez 28: Senior Blake Burzell finished with 22 points for the Breakers, who knocked off the defending Orange Coast League champion in a league opener on the road Wednesday.

Nolan Naess had 13 points for Laguna Beach (15-3, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division 3AA.

The Breakers led 29-11 at halftime.

Laguna Beach travels to play Calvary Chapel on Friday at 7 p.m.

Ocean View 89, Segerstrom 66: Senior center Mehkel Harvey scored 14 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked five shots, leading the defending Golden West League champion Seahawks in Wednesday’s league opener on the road.

Ocean View’s Seth Mishler made six three-pointers and finished with 18 points. He added four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.

Paul Head had 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Seahawks.

Ocean View, No. 7 in Division 3AA, plays at Loara on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Marina 70, Huntington Beach 60: Junior forward Jakob Alamudun poured in 31 points for the host Vikings in a Sunset League contest on Wednesday.

Marina (11-7, 1-1 in league) outscored the Oilers 17-7 in the second quarter to take a 40-27 lead into halftime.

The Vikings, who share the No. 9 spot in CIF Southern Section Division 3A, play at Los Alamitos on Friday at 7 p.m.

Estancia 55, Saddleback 49: Senior guard Cameron Jones led the host Eagles with 16 points in their first Orange Coast League game on Wednesday.

Estancia’s Jackson Winters added 15 points.

The Eagles (12-5, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 13 in CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA, host Godinez on Friday at 7 p.m.

Costa Mesa 61, Calvary Chapel 18: Junior guard Nico Dasca produced 22 points, 12 steals and six assists in the Mustangs’ Orange Coast League opener at home Wednesday.

Tre Villalpando contributed 22 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for Costa Mesa (6-7, 1-0 in league), which plays at Saddleback on Friday at 7 p.m.

Sage Hill 84, Brethren Christian 48: Senior guard Isaiah Vargas led the visiting Warriors in an Academy League game on Wednesday.

Sage Hill improved to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in league, while Brethren Christian fell to 0-4 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Edison 1, Los Alamitos 0: Senior Zac Ingalls scored for the visiting Chargers, helping them stay perfect in the Sunset League on Wednesday.

Mitchell Wilson made six saves for Edison (10-3-2, 3-0-0 in league), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

The Chargers play host to Newport Harbor (3-0-0 in league) in a first-place showdown on Friday at 5 p.m.

Estancia 5, Saddleback 3: Senior Andy Martinez was one of five Eagles to record a goal in an Orange Coast League opener at home on Wednesday.

Estancia (8-3-2 overall), ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division 3, got goals from Aaron Neri, Charly Segura, Nicolas Ramirez and Andres Millan.

The Eagles host Godinez on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Laguna Beach 1, Godinez 0: Sophomore Jet Rocha scored the goal for the Breakers in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League opener at Santa Ana Valley High.

Laguna Beach (6-3-1 overall) faces Calvary Chapel at Centennial Regional Park in Santa Ana on Friday at 2:45 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 25, Estancia 0: Sophia Lucas, Alex Peros, Claire Kelly and Isabel Riches all scored three goals for the host Breakers in an Orange Coast League opener on Wednesday.

Danielle Borelli, Grace Houlahan, Molly Renner and Kyla Whitelock each scored twice for Laguna Beach (12-0, 1-0 in league). Thea Walsh made four saves and also scored a goal in the field, while Quinn Winter made nine saves.

The Breakers, top-ranked in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and 2, play host to No. 4 Corona del Mar in a nonleague game on Jan. 17 at 3:30 p.m.

Estancia (3-5, 0-1) plays Godinez in a league game on Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. at Costa Mesa High.

Newport Harbor 15, Edison 2: Senior Jessica Lynch scored five goals for the Sailors in Wednesday’s Sunset League game at home.

Sarah Barker, Kaela Whelan and Emily Cantu each scored two goals for the Sailors (7-6, 1-1 in league).

Karis Couch, Annie Rankin, Kili Skibby and Linnea Kelly scored one goal apiece, while Erin Ross made nine saves.

Edison fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in league.

Los Alamitos 22, Marina 1: The Vikings fell to 0-2 in the Sunset League after Wednesday’s game at Newport Harbor High.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach 58, Marina 28: Sophomore guard Marisa Tanga led a balanced scoring effort by the visiting Oilers with 13 points in a Sunset League game on Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Shelby Schuesler added 10 points, and freshman guards Meghan McIntyre and Alyssa Real each had eight points.

Junior center Daniella Benabou had nine rebounds. Junior forward Bella Serrano added eight rebounds.

The Oilers (12-5, 2-0 in league) will host Fountain Valley (7-12, 0-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Marina dropped to 4-14 overall and 0-2 in league.

Sage Hill 60, Brethren Christian 25: Freshman forward Emily Elliott had 12 points and 12 rebounds, as the host Lightning improved to 4-0 in Academy League play on Wednesday.

Senior guard Kate Knollenberg added 13 points for the Lightning.

Sage Hill, which is 11-6 overall, will host St. Margaret’s (7-6, 2-1) at 6 p.m. on Friday.

The Warriors dropped to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in league.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar 63, Northwood 16: Seniors Peter Hollingshead (160 pounds) and Alex Denisov (132) recorded pins for the host Sea Kings on Wednesday.

CdM improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in league. Last season, the Sea Kings’ only league victory came at Northwood.

The Sea Kings will compete in the Troy Invitational on Saturday. Pacific Coast League action resumes on Jan. 17, as CdM hosts Irvine.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Ocean View 2, Segerstrom 2: Senior forward Chelsea Hardgrave scored both goals for the visiting Seahawks in their Golden West League opener Tuesday.

Ocean View (1-7-2, 0-0-1 in league) continues league play with a home match against Loara on Thursday at 3 p.m.
