High school roundup: Newport Harbor girls’ water polo finishes 10th at Irvine tournament

The Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team finished 10th at the Irvine Southern California Championships on Saturday after falling to San Clemente 4-3 in the ninth-place game at Irvine’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

Linnea Kelly, Jessica Lynch and Karis Couch scored for the Sailors, who also earned a 9-5 victory over Coronado earlier Saturday. Sarah Barker, Emily Cantu and Lynch all scored twice, with Kili Skibby, Nikki Clark and Olivia Giolas adding single goals.

Coach Brian Melstrom said Skibby had a strong tournament, leading the Sailors with 11 goals over the five games.

Newport Harbor (13-9) plays host to Huntington Beach in a Sunset League finale on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner takes outright second place in the league.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Pacifica Christian Orange County 69, Saddleback Valley Christian 66

Sophomore guard Dominick Harris finished with 31 points in the San Joaquin League game, helping the host Tritons upset the No. 2-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA poll and keep their Division 5AA playoff hopes alive on Saturday.

Pacifica Christian (10-15 overall, 3-4 in league), No. 4 in Division 5AAA, handed Saddleback Valley Christian (20-5, 4-1) its first setback in league.

Josh Griffith had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Tritons, and Primo Belfiore added 10 points.

Pacifica Christian is in a must-win situation on Monday, when it closes out league play at Orangewood Academy (15-9, 4-2) at 7 p.m. The Tritons need to win, and have Saddleback Valley Christian defeat Orangewood on Wednesday to force a tie for third place and the league’s final guaranteed postseason berth.

WRESTLING

Katella 46, Corona del Mar 28: The Sea Kings (9-5) lost to the Orange League champion Knights in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southern Division dual championships on Saturday at Redondo Union High.

CdM received victories from Eric Rector (106 pounds), Devin Reasin (132), Alex Denisov (138), Cole Jensen (145) and Peter Hollingshead (170). All of the Sea Kings’ wins came by pin.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

St. Margaret’s 1, Sage Hill 0 (OT): Visiting St. Margaret’s scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute in Friday’s Academy League game.

Sage Hill assistant coach Megan Cid said that senior Taylor Magliarditi anchored a strong defense made up of juniors Karli Davis, Hannah Woodworth and Sydney McCord, as well as sophomore Brooke Avedisian. Junior goalkeeper Michelle Hung made 15 total saves.

Sage Hill (11-7-1, 6-4-1 in league) plays at Oxford Academy on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
