High school roundup: Los Amigos girls’ water polo advances to Division 7 semifinals

Junior Natalie Valentin scored five goals as the Los Amigos High girls’ water polo team beat Godinez 10-8 in a CIF Southern Section Division 7 quarterfinal game Saturday at Santa Ana Valley High.

Seniors Andrea Aguilar and Michelle Maldonado each scored twice for second-seeded Los Amigos (21-6), while senior Bri Arostico added a goal. Senior goalie Natalie Albarran made seven saves.

The Lobos will play Hemet West Valley in the Division 7 semifinals Wednesday. West Valley (16-6) beat Menifee Paloma Valley 6-4 in another quarterfinal game Saturday. Wednesday’s game is a designated home game for Los Amigos, but will be played at an alternate site.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Downey Warren 47, Corona del Mar 20: Junior guard Samantha Uehara paced the host Sea Kings (12-16) in their second-round loss to the Bears (17-10) in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs on Saturday night.

Junior center Tatiana Bruening had seven points and 12 rebounds, while junior guard Malia Halafuka added three points and seven rebounds.

CdM was the third seed from the Pacific Coast League this season. The Sea Kings made a return to the playoffs after going 4-21 the year prior.

San Bernardino Arroyo Valley 64, Edison 45: Senior guard Gabby Samiy had 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals, but the visiting Chargers were knocked out of the Division 2A playoffs on Saturday night.

Senior forward Finley Garnett had a team-high 15 points for the Chargers (17-11). She added five assists.

Senior center Ashley Niemand had 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Lainey Johnson had six points.

Chargers coach Sara Brown said that senior point guard Hope Nguyen missed the game after suffering a hyperextended knee in her team’s first-round game against Tustin.

Edison finished the season as the second seed out of the Sunset League.

Bell Gardens 48, Sage Hill 33: The Lightning were defeated on the road in the second round of the Division 4AA playoffs.

Sage Hill, which finished in second place in the Academy League, ended the season with an overall record of 17-10.

WRESTLING

Corona del Mar junior Cole Jensen placed eighth at 145 pounds in the CIF Southern Section Inland Division finals at Temecula Great Oak High on Saturday.

Jensen finished the tournament 3-3, recording two pins and a major decision.
