A renowned Korean musician will perform Friday evening during a concert featuring Glendale students who have only recently learned to play music and who have participated in a five-week Caesura Youth Orchestra summer camp.

Mikyung Soung, a 22-year-old native of Seoul, South Korea, currently studies at the Colburn School in Los Angeles with Peter Lloyd, a double bass and chamber music professor at the school’s conservatory.

Soung, a double bassist, made her music debut at age 12 with the Guri Philharmonic Orchestra, and has since performed with several international orchestras.

The Caesura Youth Orchestra was founded in 2015 by Dave Ferguson, who connects local students with music professionals.

In many cases, the students who join the orchestra are learning to play an instrument for the first time.

Ferguson said he’s proud to have watched them improve during the recent camp.

“It’s really inspiring to me to watch the changes that happen with these kids that happen over a short period,” he said.

As for Soung, who is still learning English, working with kids, no matter their musical experience, gives her joy, according to Lloyd.

“I know she enjoys going to different schools, hoping to inspire the students and the teachers,” he said.

In speaking of Soung’s talent, Lloyd added: “When she plays, it’s bass playing you’ve never heard before. You know immediately that you’re listening to something special.”

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in the auditorium at Roosevelt Middle School, located at 222 E. Acacia Ave.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted to support the orchestra, Ferguson said.
