Local filmmaker to premiere film at Outfest

A Glendale resident who abandoned her former career as a photographer to become a filmmaker will premiere her fifth film this Saturday at Outfest, an LGBT film festival in Los Angeles.

Marina Rice Bader, 60, began making films seven years ago after raising four children and deciding to leave photography behind to pursue a career in films.

“I woke up one day and asked, ‘What am I going to do with the last third of my life?’”

She founded her independent company, Soul Kiss Films, and has since produced evocative films by women and for women.

Her fifth film, “Ava’s Impossible Things,” is one she wrote and directed, starring actress Chloe Farnworth as Ava.

When a former female flame reappears in Ava’s life, she’s forced to make a decision about pursuing love.

“When the woman comes back many years later, [Ava] makes a decision to go for that love, to make the first move, to be brave enough to make a tough choice,” Rice Bader said. “It’s a tough choice to completely uproot everything that you have and follow love.”

After the film’s screening at the Director’s Guild of America on Saturday, it will be available starting on Sunday on Vimeo with access for viewers around the world, including members of the LGBT community, something that makes Rice Bader proud.

Vimeo acquired the film as part of the video-sharing website’s “Share the Screen” initiative to invest in female filmmakers.

“No matter where they are, these women that don’t have access to a friendly, supportive community can be invited into my world,” Rice Bader said. “I am all about inclusion. The idea that everyone is included makes me so happy.”

As she prepares for her movie’s world premiere, Rice Bader said she is also certain that she wouldn’t have come this far in her career without an unwavering commitment to her passion for filmmaking.

“It’s through sheer will. Sheer will are the two words that I would just put out there,” she said. “Sheer will can get you so many places than even many people with more experience, with more connections. If they don’t have sheer will, they’re not going anywhere.”

“Ava’s Impossible Things” will be shown at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Director’s Guild of America, 7920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles. For more information or to buy tickets visit outfest.org.
