A first-ever Restoration Expo to educate local residents on how to properly preserve their historic homes will be held on May 15 at Brand Park.

The Glendale Historical Society is putting together the event and has recruited 30 design professionals, contractors, restoration craftsmen and vintage lighting suppliers to speak.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Doctor’s House Lawn and Gazebo.

“The community is going to have a chance to come out and see all things related to home renovation and restoration, which, of course, is an important topic here in Glendale because so many people have architecturally significant and historic homes,” said Robert Gordon, a member of the historical society and event coordinator, in a phone interview.

Another goal of the event is to create awareness about how to correctly go about restoration and preservation without making mistakes.

“[Homes] are a tremendous part of the heritage of the city of Glendale and really a treasure that should be celebrated as often as possible,” Gordon said.

There will be several 30-minute discussions including “Restoring and Weather-stripping Original Windows and Doors” and “Historic Chimney Restoration.”

“With the Restoration Expo, we’re excited to tap valuable resources and preservation experts to assist the community in the repair and refurbishment of their vintage properties,” said Greg Grammer, president of the historical society.

The event will also feature food, children’s activities and a tour of the Doctor’s House Museum, which itself is a fully restored Queen Anne-Eastlake Victorian home.
