The Northwest Glendale Lions Club presented scholarships in mid-May to three Glendale Community College students who have special needs.

Jacob Berumen, Lisa Wuchter and Ariss Khalatians each received $1,000 scholarships to help them achieve their educational goals.

Berumen’s disability is generalized anxiety, which creates a problem in testing. He is graduating from Glendale Community College in the nursing program with a 3.36 grade-point average and plans to attend Cal State Fullerton to continue nursing studies.

Wuchter is blind in her right eye and her left eye is dimming. She is graduating from Glendale Community College after completing a course in medical coding.

Khalatians has a neurologically based processing impairment that affects learning. He is graduating from Glendale Community College and plans to attend Cal State Northridge, majoring in psychology.

Presenting the scholarships were Chairman Ted Walters and Lion member Steve Weber. The club president is Tom Masterani.

These scholarships are made possible by contributions from Lions Club members and friends. One of the scholarships is provided by the Robert E. Davies Memorial Fund, established in honor of former member Bob Davies. Another is provided by the scholarship fund created by former member Roy Biederman. The others are provided by the club’s scholarship fund.

The Northwest Glendale Lions Club has awarded more than $87,000 in scholarships in the 28 years since the program was initiated.

The Lions Club held its speaker’s contest in April. The winner on the club level was Sarah Gillespie of Crescenta Valley High School. She won $75. The topic was “Liberty and Justice for All — What Does it Mean to You?”

Speakers have the opportunity of advancing to six levels, and the final winner for California receives $10,000. The program offers students a total of $104,000 each year.

Air terminal to be recognized

Take a peek at the lovely restored Grand Central Air Terminal while supporting the Glendale Historical Society’s endowment and preservation funds during the third annual gala “Come Fly With Us” from 7 to 10 p.m. this Saturday.

Disney recently completed restoration and rehabilitation of the terminal. Dedicated in 1929, it played a pivotal role in the development of aviation in the United States and became the premier location for air travel in Southern California, frequented by Hollywood stars as well as notable aviation pioneers “Lucky Lindy,” Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes.

The building is listed on the Glendale Register of Historic Resources and will soon be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.

The gala is sponsored by the Walt Disney Co. and G&C Properties. It will feature live music and a silent auction. Tickets are $140 for society members and $190 for the general public, and can be purchased online at www.GlendaleHistorical.org or call (818) 242-7447.¿
