Glendale High dancers take part in Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii

Glendale High dancers performed Wednesday in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii, where they participated in the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The event marked the first time Glendale High’s dancers performed in the annual Dec. 7 parade down Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki.

The dance team has won 60 national titles, and in 2015, the dancers performed before a national audience when they were the opening act at the beginning of the Rose Parade.

However, their experience performing before survivors, veterans, military and others at Pearl Harbor was unique, said Kelly Palmer, who has coached the team for 20 years.

“Because we are primarily a competitive team, I think it gave [us] a desire to get out there and utilize dance as a way to connect with other schools and dance teams in a non-competitive arena, and that was very refreshing,” Palmer said.

One day before the Pearl Harbor parade, team members also performed during a commemorative ceremony held near the USS Bowfin that was, in part, choreographed to the speech President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered to a joint session of Congress the day after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941.

For its participation in the events, the Glendale High team was presented with a flag that flew over the USS Arizona Memorial.

The flag honors the 2,403 lives lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor, including 68 civilians.

It flew over the sunken battleship USS Arizona on July 4 of this year.
