Fire destroys multiple vehicles, damages homes in Glendale

Five cars were destroyed as a fire burned through a Glendale carport Sunday morning, authorities said.

The Glendale Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at a townhome complex in the 500 block of West California Avenue around 9:40 a.m. Anita Shandi, fire department spokeswoman, said heavy smoke was seen coming from the building when firefighters arrived.

The fire originated from the carport and eventually spread to the townhome units above, damaging the floors and walls of at least two of the homes. A gas line was damaged as a result of the fire and caused a leak, according to Shandi.

All of the residents of the townhomes were evacuated safely, and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by 11:15 a.m. Shandi said firefighters from Burbank and Pasadena were called in to help.

It’s unknown what caused the fire, and the incident is under investigation.
