Traffic stop leads to arrests, seizure of marijuana and drug paraphernalia

More than 5 pounds of marijuana, 96 butane canisters and other materials commonly used to make butane honey oil were recovered during a traffic stop in Glendale Friday night, police said.

Glendale resident Leonard Davis, 36, was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana to sell and transport, while the driver, Glendale resident Elaine Murga, 28, was arrested on suspicion of possessing a counterfeit driver’s license. She also had two outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Just before 10:30 p.m., police stopped their car at Cedar Street and Broadway for a license-plate violation and later smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to Glendale Police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

Officers reportedly found four cellphones on Davis and a jar containing marijuana in his sweater pocket.

In addition to the marijuana and butane canisters, police found a canister containing marijuana buds, steel screens, ziplock bags, goggles, gloves and marijuana pipes in the car, Lightfoot said.

According to police, these materials are commonly used to make highly potent butane honey oil, a waxy substance created by pouring a highly flammable solvent such as butane over marijuana through a poorly ventilated cylinder, which strips the marijuana of THC.

During a search Sunday of the residence of Davis’ family in the 100 block of South Cedar Street, police reportedly seized a handgun and a small amount of marijuana.

Authorities did not locate a honey oil lab.

The investigation is ongoing.
