Glendale PTA: College and Career Day slated for Oct. 28

Attending higher education after high school graduation can be a daunting task for students. Thankfully, with some planning and guidance, the road to higher education can be made a bit easier which is why the annual College and Career Day has been such a popular activity. This year’s event is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, so plan to attend.

Glendale High School

Deadline for submissions to the PTA Reflections art contest draws near. For Glendale High students working on projects for the 2015-16 program, entries are due by Oct. 19. The theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly.”

Glendale High takes part in the Great California Shakeout earthquake drill on Oct. 15. Homecoming Court applications are due Oct. 16.

Glendale High’s homecoming football game against Hoover High starts with pageantry at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, on Moyse Field. Please come out to cheer on the Nitros and support the GHS PTSA through concession purchases.

Wilson Middle School

Helping Glendale Unified School District families is what the Healthy Start Fall Food Drive is all about. Students may bring nonperishable food items (no glass containers) to donate through Friday, Oct. 16.

Wilson’s PTSA Board Meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in the library.

Red Ribbon Week, one of the best known drug prevention and awareness programs in the nation, runs Oct. 26 through 29 at Wilson with activities scheduled for students.

Wilson students are reminded that the deadline for entries to the PTA Reflections Art Contest is Oct. 19.

“Help Your Child Deal with Peer Pressure” is a free parent and student workshop scheduled for Oct. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the school library. A separate session for students takes place while the parents are in session. This is being conducted by the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Services Program in collaboration with the Wilson PTSA.

The PTSA’s “Grounds for Change” fundraiser continues. It features organic and socially responsible coffees and teas available for purchase with sales helping to fund PTSA programs at Wilson. All orders must be submitted by Oct. 23.

Rounding out the month with a little festive fun is a pumpkin carving contest on Oct. 28. This lunch activity is being hosted by the Associated Student Body.

R.D. White Elementary

Math can be fun! Find out why by attending R.D. White’s Family Math Night for students and their families starting at 5 p.m. today at the school. Be there or be squared!

Safety first as the school participates in the Great Shakeout earthquake drill Thursday at 10:15 a.m.

The school recognizes Red Ribbon Week starting Oct. 26 with a number of scheduled activities. R.D. White ends the month off on Oct. 29 with a Halloween Parade at 8:30 a.m.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School

Publicity Chair Brandy Black invites everyone to help bring in the fall mood at the Verdugo Woodlands’ Fall Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. “Music, games, and food for the whole family,” adds Black. This is being held on the school grounds at 1751 N. Verdugo Road, and tickets may be purchased in advance through the school’s website at www.vwpta.com or at the event itself.

PTA memberships are still being sought. Adult memberships are $10 per person and a student membership is $8. Forms are on the school’s PTA page at www.vwpta.com and payments may be made with cash or check in the school’s office. A PTA meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
