Letter: Rocky, barren school fields a health risk to kids

Share

Parents from Glendale complained to local middle schools’ officials about the poor condition and safety of schools’ fields. They are asking for better lighting and a good space of grass covering the area where students practice sports.

A Rosemont Middle School soccer coach raised a concern to the school board, “as a result of the uneven ground, he counted six ankle injuries,” according to the News-Press story. The coach said it has been challenging to deal with kids sliding and falling, and he stated that rocks have risen to the surface of the field and kids are getting injured when they trip or fall.

This issue should be taken under consideration because it affects the health and security of young children.

Health experts can easily explain how a small wound can catch any type of bacteria from a rock or dirt, causing an infection around the wound and worsening the state of the injury. It is definitely an area of concern and criticism when the health of an individual is at risk.

Additionally, the scarce amount of lighting while practicing sports does not solely affect the player’s exercise ability, but also the player’s vision, brain functioning, and most of all safety.

The implementation of grass and lighting in schools’ fields is extremely essential for the maintenance of the children’s health, security and talents.
