On Campus at GCC: Open registration continues

Open registration for the fall 2016 semester at Glendale Community College continues through Aug. 26. Many of the more than 1,500 courses still have openings. The fall semester begins Aug. 29.

Applications for the fall semester are still being accepted and should be submitted as soon as possible online at glendale.edu. Questions about applying and registering can be answered on the college’s live chat. Click the “Live Chat” button found on the same website.

The schedule of credit and noncredit courses can be found at glendale.edu/schedules as well as links to the academic calendar and a list of important dates. A virtual tour of the campus is available at glendale.edu/virtualtour.

Another feature, Financial Aid TV at glendale.financialaidtv.com includes short videos explaining the financial-aid process. For information about tuition-free noncredit programs offered at the college’s Garfield campus, go to glendale.edu/ce.

Credit courses for university transfer and certificate programs offered in the fall include subjects ranging from accounting to welding. A wide range of noncredit courses are offered in basic skills, English as a second language, lifelong learning, office/business technology and parent education.

Associate degrees for transfer are offered to provide a clear pathway to a CSU major and a bachelor’s degree. Students who earn an AA-T or AS-T degree are guaranteed admission with junior standing to a California State University. Options such as dual enrollment for high school students and several career and technical programs are also offered.

Day trips and tours offered

Glendale Community College’s Community Services Education Program offers day trips to local attractions by way of deluxe, air-conditioned motor coach and experienced tour directors.

This fall, offerings will include a beach trip, a foodie tour, a Big Bear Lake cruise and an avocado festival.

The “Beauty and the Beach” trip will travel to Venice and Santa Monica on Sept. 17. The trip will include a stroll on Ocean Front Walk in Venice as well as visits to the Santa Monica Pier, Palisades Park and Third Street Promenade, UCLA’s Royce Hall and Powell Library, Westwood Village and Armand Hammer Museum. The cost is $69 per person.

On Sept. 23, take a bite out of Los Angeles with an included lunch and tastings. The food-themed excursion will explore the history, culture and cuisine of several L.A. neighborhoods.

There will be stops in Pasadena, including Caltech, Pasadena City Hall and Castle Green as well as a popular bakery. In Eagle Rock, there will also be a bakery visit and a stop at a Filipino café. Then on to Burbank for lunch at the Smoke House. The final stop will be Hollywood and a gelato shop with more than 1,000 flavors. The cost is $99 per person.

Big Bear Oktoberfest and lake cruise will be on Oct. 2. The Big Bear Oktoberfest is known as one of the best in California with old-world ambiance, German entertainment, brats and knockwursts from a German butcher as well as beer. In the afternoon, there will be a paddlewheel cruise on the lake. The fee is $99 per person, which includes the German-style lunch.

On Oct. 8, there will be a coastal train ride to the 30th annual California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria. The festival will include a commercial marketplace, arts and crafts, entertainment stages and a food venue with creative avocado and guacamole dishes. The cost is $89 per person.
