On Campus at GCC: Registration remains open for spring 2017

Open registration continues through Feb. 12 for the spring 2017 semester that begins Feb. 21 at Glendale Community College.

The college application is online and can be found at glendale.edu/apply. New students must submit an application for admission before registering for courses. The college offers a live chat for general application and registration information. Go to the home page and click “live chat.”

This spring, there are courses in subjects from accounting to welding.

There are still openings in several classes, including Art/Architecture 141: Interior Design for beginning through advanced levels. The class offers seminars, field trips and guest lecturers. Freehand sketching, 2D and 3D composition, and interior lighting design for residential and commercial projects will be covered in the class, which will meet from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

The computer science and information systems program has spring courses on several subjects including information technology, programming, mobile app development as well as computer assembly and analysis.

The business administration program has classes in project management, written business communications, workplace ethics, insurance, business law, money and banking. Check the online class schedule for openings in all spring classes at glendale.edu/schedules. Click “Spring” to select the term and the subjects are listed alphabetically.

For those interested in starting classes in fall 2017, follow the deadlines listed on the checklist at glendale.edu/checklist to be eligible for priority registration. The schedule will be available online in mid-April.

Food pantry accepting donations

Glendale Community College’s Food for Thought Pantry for students opened in the fall semester and is currently accepting monetary donations and nonperishable items.

Among the items needed are rice, pasta, pasta sauce, dry beans, pancake mix, vegetable oil, sugar, canned vegetables or soup, cereal, peanut butter, non-refrigerated drinks (apple juice and juice boxes), shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The pantry, located in the San Rafael Building, provides food and other items to currently enrolled students who fill out a short application. More information about the Food for Thought Pantry and links to studies on hunger among college students can be found at glendale.edu/foodpantry.

Program helps foster youth

Glendale Community College students who are or were foster youths have access to services to help them succeed academically in the Guardian Scholars program.

Services include academic, career and personal counseling. There is also help with student educational plans, financial aid and scholarship applications, job placement, finding on and off campus resources, workshops and activities, tutoring referrals, university tours and peer mentoring.

Trips and tours offered

Glendale Community College’s Community Services Education Program offers day trips to local attractions by way of deluxe, air-conditioned motor-coach vehicles with experienced tour directors.

Upcoming trips include Sinatra’s Palm Springs on Jan. 22, “Greystone Mansion: The Manor” on Jan. 28, “Murder Mystery” at Lawry’s on Feb. 3, Magicopolis on Feb. 11 and Welk Resort Theatre on Feb. 25. Many other trips are offered in March and April.

The single-day tours depart from the upper parking lot on the college’s Verdugo campus, which can be entered from Mountain Street. There is a $3 parking fee for the day.
