Glendale PTA: Wilson Middle School to host open house, arts festival

Wilson Middle School, 1221 Monterey Road, will host its open house and arts festival from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Parking is limited and will be available on the basketball courts and field, weather permitting. Guests are asked to carpool or prepare to walk a short distance to the school, if possible.

Arts festival exhibits and a burger truck will be open from 5 to 7 p.m., and various clubs and departments will have food and carnival booths. Music, drama, choir and instrumental performances will be presented from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium with the open house kickoff meeting to be held from 5:45 to 6 p.m.

Classroom visits will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., including a student art exhibit in room 1125.

A meeting for parents of incoming sixth- and seventh-grade students will be held in the auditorium from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.

The open house is not intended for discussing grades or other concerns. Parents may make an appointment to discuss their child’s academic progress through the school’s counseling office at (818) 244-8145, Ext. 1171.

A reminder, courtesy of Wilson Middle School, for all skateboarders and parents in the city of Glendale: skateboarding or using coasting devices is not permitted on any public roadway, alley or sidewalk in any business district within the city per the municipal code. Violation of the code can result in a citation.

Learn the differences between depression and sadness during a free parent workshop hosted by Glendale Unified School District’s Student Support Services Department at 6 p.m. today at the Library Connection at Adams Square, 1100 E. Chevy Chase Drive.

Significantly stressful events, such as the death of a loved one or loss of employment, can trigger depression. Seating is limited. Call (818) 548-3833 to preregister.

The school district is moving from at-large elections to voting districts. Community forums are scheduled at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the auditorium at Roosevelt Middle School, 222 E. Acacia Ave.; at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the board room of the district’s administration building, 223 N. Jackson St.; at 6 p.m. next Wednesday in the auditorium at Crescenta Valley High School, 4400 Ramsdell Ave.; and at 6 p.m. on March 17 in the auditorium at Toll Middle School, 700 Glenwood Road.

Spring break for Glendale Unified students will be March 21 to 25.

Glendale High School

Congratulations to the Glendale High Scholastic Bowl team on taking second place in the competition. Team members Maryam Amran, Regina Kim, Andrew Nazarians, Jae In Song, and Lora Sukiasyan did a stellar job under the guidance of advisers Sarah Morrison and Kelly Palmer.

“Helping Your Child Navigate the Path to College” is a free event that will be hosted by the Glendale High School PTSA and College Fit 360 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on April 4 at Glendale High School.

The information will be particularly important for 11th-grade students. However, there will also be information for ninth- and 10th-graders.

College Fit 360 is an educational consulting firm specializing in guiding students and families through the college application process. Topics at the event will include how parents can help their child prepare for college, what today’s college application process looks like and why it’s important to find the right college.

Graduating students are reminded that late-order forms for caps and gowns are in the student store during snack time and lunch.

Wilson Middle School

Elections for key PTSA volunteers will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the school library.

Wilson’s spring food drive will run April 4 to 15. Bring nonperishable food items that will help families in Glendale.

John Marshall Elementary School

“Marshall’s Got Talent,” the school’s annual talent showcase, will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the school’s auditorium.

Marshall’s PTA will help host an event called “Jump Rope for Heart” on March 18 as students show commitment to health by jumping to raise funds.

R.D. White Elementary School

Students will demonstrate that staying healthy can be fun during the school’s jog-a-thon on Friday.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School

A meeting of Woodlanders Are Volunteers for Education, known as WAVE, is set for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

PTA members will meet at 6:30 p.m. on March 29.
