Glendale PTA: Dad’s Club to host pancake fundraiser

Dads are usually known for being skilled on the grill, which is probably what makes the annual pancake breakfast fundraiser sponsored by the Dad’s Club among the best-loved around town. The event will start at 7 a.m. on Saturday in the group’s clubhouse, 1728 Cañada Blvd. The griddle will stay hot until noon.

Tickets are $5 for all-you-can-eat pancakes, and, as the dads say, “May the forks be with you.”

Proceeds benefit the Dad’s Club, which provides a gathering place for countless community activities.

Substance abuse will be the topic of a free parent workshop hosted by Glendale Unified School District’s Student Support Services Department at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10 in the Library Connection at Adams Square, 1100 E. Chevy Chase Drive.

Parents and adult family members will learn about the risks of alcohol consumption and other drug abuse during adolescence and protective measures that can be taken to prevent it. Seating is limited. Call (818) 548-3833 to pre-register.

Glendale High School

The California State PTA offers graduating high school students who are members of the PTA with a chance to receive a $750 scholarship. The deadline for applications is Feb. 1 and information, including forms, is available at CAPTA.org. Also available is the Dr. Ralph White Scholarship for $500.

Glendale High’s “Unconcert” will be presented at 7 p.m. on Feb. 11 and 12 in the John Wayne Performing Arts Center.

Oratorical, the school’s longest-running annual tradition, will be presented on Feb. 26. Glendale High School’s first Oratorical was in 1910 when the study of formal debate was popular in Southern California.

Each of the four grade levels at the school participate in the competition, which has four components: an original speech; a tableau (motionless figures representing a scene) carrying out the speech’s theme; class discipline during participation; and class spirit.

Wilson Middle School

Wilson’s PTSA will host “Coffee with the Principal” at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 9 in the school library. This will be followed by a free parent workshop at 9 a.m. titled “Anger Management Strategies.” An evening version of this free workshop for parents and Wilson students will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23.

A meeting of the Wilson PTSA will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 16 in the school cafeteria. This will include the annual PTSA Founder’s Day and Honorary Service Awards presentations.

John Marshall Elementary School

If you love pizza, help support the John Marshall PTA through its “Dine Out” fundraiser today and Thursday at Two Guys from Italy, 405 N. Verdugo Road. There will be a lot more than pizza on the menu, so bring family and friends out for a good cause. Proceeds benefit the school’s PTA, and a flier is available on the school’s website at johnmarshallschool.com.

Auditions for fourth- and fifth-graders to perform in “Marshall’s Got Talent” will be held at 2:45 p.m. today. This is for students who turned in their application slips by the Jan. 15 deadline. Auditions for lower grades were held Monday. Selected students will perform in the March 15 performances.

John Marshall PTA’s Father Daughter Dance will start at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the school.

The PTA will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 18. All parents are encouraged to attend.

R.D. White Elementary School

Fifth-grade Panorama Picture Day will be at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Parents and adult family members can stop by for “Coffee with the Principal” at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 4.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School

The Verdugo Woodlands’ PTA Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

A meeting of the group Woodlanders Are Volunteers for Education, known was WAVE, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 9.

The 2016 Black and White Affair will be held on Feb. 6 at the La Cañada Country Club. This elegant dinner, dance and auction, hosted by the PTA, will start at 6 p.m. for VIP ticket holders and 6:45 p.m. for general admission. Proceeds support the school’s arts and technology programs.
