College Update: Coffey already heating up for Seton Hall

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Sophia Coffey (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2015) Seton Hall volleyball freshman: With back-to-back honors as All-Area Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year behind her, Coffey has wasted no time in acclimating to the collegiate level and carrying her success there.

Coffey is fourth in the conference with 806 assists and eighth with 9.37 assists per set heading into a Big East Conference match against Georgetown on Friday,

The setter, who’s started 21 of 23 matches, also boasts 69 kills, 17 aces, 199 digs and 22 blocks.

Seton Hall broke a two-match skid with a 3-1 win over DePaul on Saturday and Coffey turned in a stellar day with a match-high 36 assists accompanying seven kills and six digs.

Next up, Seton Hall faces Georgetown on Friday looking to reach .500, as the Pirates are 11-12, 5-6 in conference. Seton Hall previously defeated Georgetown, 3-2, on Sept. 27 with Coffey putting up 46 assists and nine digs.

Emily Develle (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2015) Lehigh volleyball freshman: Develle’s digging in as a mainstay in the Mountain Hawks’ lineup in her rookie season.

The libero leads Lehigh with 234 digs, her best showing coming in a three-game sweep of Holy Cross on Oct. 17 when she notched 22 digs.

It began a current four-match streak in which she’s tallied double-digit digs with the 22 and then 10, 12 and 12. She’s also garnered 51 assists and 26 aces in 89 sets played.
Heading into Friday’s Patriot League match against Colgate, Lehigh sits at 15-11, 7-4 in conference.

Artak Arzumanyan (Glendale High, 2015) Pepperdine water polo freshman: Fresh off a decorated career at Glendale High, Arzumanyan has already earned plenty of playing time at Pepperdine.

Arzumanyan has seen action in 16 of Pepperdine’s 20 games so far with seven goals to show for it.

His last goal came in a 16-6 win over Air Force at the SoCal Invitational on Oct. 11. In an Oct. 3 match against San Jose State, Arzumanyan had two goals in a match for the second time this season as the Waves won, 14-8.

Heading into Friday’s match at home against Pacific, Pepperdine is 11-9 and 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Andrew Gonzalez (Glendale resident) Fordham water polo senior: Gonzalez is yet again playing a key role for the Rams.

Thus far, he’s notched 31 goals, 16 assists and seven steals. At one point in the season, Gonzalez had an eight-game scoring streak, highlighted by a five-goal showing against Brown in a 13-8 loss on Sept. 27.

Gonzalez is joined on the team by two former Flintridge Prep All-Area selections in sophomore Ethan Vandeventer and freshman Diego Delgado.

Vandeventer scored a career-high five goals against Salem International in Friday’s 16-9 win.

For the season, he has 13 goals, 11 assists and 28 steals.

Delgado was the Collegiate Water Polo Assn. Northern Division Rookie of the Week on Sept. 17, as he tallied six goals, three assists, four steals and two blocks in four games at the Bison Invitational.

On the season, Delgado, who’s scored in each of the last three games, has 21 goals, 25 assists and 31 steals.

Fordham (14-11, 3-5 in CWPA) has an association matchup Friday at Connecticut College.

Ani Aghakhanian (Crescenta Valley High, 2015) L.A. Valley water polo sophomore: Aghakhanian is the latest former Falcon to find big success at Valley, as she currently leads the Western State Conference with 91 goals and 4.79 goal-per-match average. In addition, she has 23 assists and 28 steals through 19 games.

Valley leads the conference at 7-0, boasting a 15-6 overall mark following an 18-5 conference win over Santa Monica on Wednesday.

LAVC will host Rio Hondo in a nonconference match Friday before the WSC Tournament commences Nov. 6 at Pierce.

Aghakhanian is joined on the team, which is coached by former Crescenta Valley Coach Pete Loporchio, by a slew of former Burbank and Burroughs players along with Yoselin Galdamez of Crescenta Valley and Melani Aghazarian of Glendale.

Aghazarian is turning in a strong season with 43 steals, 33 assists and 23 goals. Galdamez has seven goals, three assists and 17 steals.
