With its turn to host a Pacific League match, the Burroughs High girls’ golf team wanted to put up a superb performance at De Bell Golf Club.

The Indians also wanted to move a step closer to returning to the CIF playoffs.

Led by seven-over-par 42s from Maddie Riggs and Annie Adachi, Burroughs took third with a 214 on Wednesday. Crescenta Valley finished fourth at 231, followed by Burbank (270) and La Cañada (280).

San Marino, the defending league champion, won with a 203 and Arcadia took second at 208. Katie Villegas of Arcadia took first with a 35, edging San Marino’s Elizabeth Wang by a stroke.

“We are on our home course and we definitely were up for it,” said Burroughs Coach Greg Everhart, the reigning All-Area Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year. “They are playing great and with a lot more consistency.

“We had our players shoot 42s to 44s. That’s amazing golf. Can it be better? Sure. We can play a lot better.”

The Indians received 43s from Ashley Phelps and Gabija Peturlis and a 44 from Raelinn Arnold.

“We just want to keep pushing, so they are confident to play their best golf when it counts,” Everhart said.

Crescenta Valley was led by Cathlyn Junio, who carded an area-best 41.

“She’s getting her game back and she just seems to love playing on this course,” Falcons Coach Grant Clark said. “It’s a much shorter course than some of the others in league.

“I think the focus has been a lot better of late regarding our team. I think we’re closer in a lot of areas, like the short game being better.”

Crescenta Valley received a 44 from Gloria Namkung, 47 from Vienna Bebla, 48 from Emily Redecker and 51 from Michaela Labellarte.

Burbank turned in its best showing of the season after finishing last in each of the first three league matches.

Amy Tran paced the Bulldogs with a 43, followed by a 46 from Olga-Marie Davis, 57 from Pawee Akkharachotmongkhol, 60 from Cassie Vargas and 64 from Erin Tanner.

“It’s good for them,” Burbank Coach Branco Sevic said. “We finally took a step forward and are closer to where we want to be now.

“We hoped it would be at some point this year. You just want to see them keep making progress.”

La Cañada saw Emilee Herrmann lead the way with a 50. The Spartans got a 53 from Lucille Park, 54 from Natalie St. Hippolyte, 55 from Emma McGuinness and 68 from Scarlet Kim.

“We had a couple of players who were out sick,” La Cañada Coach Dennis Ballard said. “Even with that, we are still playing better and we are practicing hard every day.”

The next league match will take place at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Altadena Golf Course.
