Flintridge Prep swimming gets split with rival Pasadena Poly

LA CAÑADA — Things appear to be promising for the Flintridge Prep boys’ swimming team. Having Andy Langen on board is certainly a plus.

Langen showed glimpses of what might be in store for the burgeoning Rebels.

He won two individual events and helped Flintridge Prep win a pair of relays en route to a 115-49 home victory against rival Pasadena Poly on Tuesday in a Prep League opener for both teams. Flintridge Prep fell, 122-42, in the girls’ portion of the meet.

Langen captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races in 21.74 seconds and 48.4, respectively, to help the Rebels improve to 3-0.

“Those are my two main events,” Langen said. “You just go into them trying to think as little as possible and focus on the job.

“You can’t over think your strategies. I felt a little tired, but it turned out to be a good day for our team and we are continuing to make progress.”

Langen teamed up with Brett Bell, Matt Ng and Sean King to open the meet with a first-place effort in the 200 medley relay (1:46.43). Langen grouped with Bell, King and Nate Morrissey to close out the event with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.3).

The Rebels received a pair of victories from Bell in the 200 freestyle (1:54.37) and 100 backstroke (56.77).

Flintridge Prep Coach Ingrid Herskind said Langen and Bell provide the Rebels with a quality one-two punch.

“They are always looking at ways to get better,” Herskind said. “They give our team a very good mix.

“We have a very gritty team and that’s because we have a lot of water polo players. It makes the team tough.”

Ng won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.62. Morrissey, Winston Chen, Ben Brookbanks and Ryan Huntley combined to take the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.56).

Pasadena Poly dipped to 4-2, 0-2 in league.

On the girls’ side, Emily Jacobs won the lone event for the Rebels (1-3, 0-2).

Jacobs captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.57. Earlier, Jacobs took second in the 200 individual medley (2:21.97).

“Emily is really strong,” Herskind said. “She’s also a good listener and continues to show she wants to learn.”

Pasadena Poly improved to 7-0, 2-0.
