Flintridge Sacred Heart water polo takes down Burroughs in overtime

Things were close throughout all four quarters of Wednesday’s nonleague girls’ water polo match between Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Burroughs High, as neither could take more than a one-goal lead through regulation.

After the score was tied after four quarters, the teams were still stalemated after the first half of overtime. However, the Tologs were able to create some separation in the second half.

Paced by two goals from Maddy Dulcich in the second half of overtime, Flintridge Sacred Heart pulled out a 5-3 victory against the host Indians.

Wednesday’s result was another close contest between the Tologs (3-0) and the Indians (1-2), as the teams played to two overtime contests last season.

“That’s why we like to play against Burroughs. We know we are going to get a good game and we know they are going to have good players,” said Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Carlos Ponce, a former Burroughs coach. “We need to play teams like this if we want to get better.

“We always seem to have good games against them and I always like coming back here where I once coached.”

Burroughs was playing without some of its key players, who were sidelined with injuries and illness. That forced Coach Jacob Cook to saddle some other players with extra minutes.

“I think us missing players had something to do with us not really playing at our best,” Cook said. “We already have a small team as it is and missing the girls made us even smaller. Most of the girls who we were missing would have played the entire game today and not get subbed in for.

“But I’m proud with the way they fought today. It’s still early in the season and we’re still learning.”

The score was tied at 3 after four quarters and neither team could break the deadlock in the first three-minute half of overtime. But that changed with 2:42 remaining. Setting up on the left side, Dulcich maneuvered past a defender and rifled a shot past Burroughs goalkeeper Kate Wilke to put the Tologs in front, 4-3.

Dulcich scored on a man-advantage situation with 1:47 left to add to the lead.

Burroughs had a chance to pull to within one when it enjoyed a man-advantage with 1:21 remaining. However, Cameron Flores fired a shot right at keeper Trisha Canessa, who was able to make the save.

“To be able to pull this out and win like this in overtime shows that we have the want and the desire,” said Dulcich, who led all scorers with three goals to go along with six steals. “We put our full hearts into it every time that we play and I think that showed today.

“We realize that in a tight game like this we know that little things mean a lot.”

Electra Williams added two goals for Flintridge Sacred Heart.

The Indians received a terrific effort from Wilke, who had 10 saves and blocked a five-meter penalty shot.

Burroughs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal by Gwen Turla. The teams exchanged goals in the second and they went into the half with the Indians leading, 2-1.

Flintridge Sacred Heart tied the score at 2 with a goal in the third and the teams accounted for a goal each in the fourth to force overtime.

In the fourth, Williams scored with 41 seconds remaining to put the Tologs up, 4-3. But the Indians tied things at 4 with just 10.6 seconds left on a goal by Lizzy Wrobel.

Bianca Sanchez also had a goal for Burroughs.
