Glendale college golf short-handed in conference match

PASADENA — It has been a tough season for the Glendale Community College women’s golf team, as the squad has struggled with low turnout.

The Vaqueros hosted a Western State Conference match Wednesday at Brookside Golf Course No. 1 and were represented by just two golfers.

However, the participation problem faced by Glendale also plagued the majority of teams in Wednesday’s event. Of the seven teams that took part, only three had enough golfers to score in the team standings.

“Evidently, it’s been a tough year in getting players in for a lot of the colleges,” Vaqueros Coach Derrick Williams said. “We’re not the only team that has had the problem of fielding enough golfers.”

Williams took over the program just a few months before the start of the season, leaving little time to recruit.

“The two players that we have are back from last year, so they are out there working hard and they have been improving,” Williams said. “They are just trying to do well individually, so hopefully they can make it to the regionals.

“I came in pretty late, so it just didn’t give me much time at all to try and get an entire team together. I have already been recruiting for next year and hopefully we’ll have some new players coming in. We need a couple more, but next year we should have at least four to six players.”

Last year’s conference and state champion Santa Barbara placed first with a team total of 340. It was followed by Citrus (387) and Bakersfield (408). Along with Glendal , College of the Canyons, Antelope Valley and Moorpark took part with limited squads.

The low-medalist was Santa Barbara’s Carolin Chang, who fired a four-over-par 78. She was followed by Micheala Klundt of Antelope Valley, who shot a 79.

The Vaqueros received a 96 from Ana Salvo and a 110 from Enya Alaan.

“I’m not really happy with how I did today,” said. “I was struggling at some points. My ball was kind of curving and I tried to correct it and then I was making some mistakes.

“This is our home course, but I haven’t played that much here. And, when I did play here, it was for only nine holes and not 18.”

The Vaqueros, who haven’t advanced to the regional tournament since 2012 when they were the state runner-up, will return to action Monday in a conference match at Simi Hills Golf Course.

That will be followed by the conference finals Oct. 30-31 at Crystalaire Country Club near Bakersfield.

“It’s only been Eyna and myself this season on the team,” Salvo said. “But it’s all right. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough to have a team, so we are really playing as individuals.”
