Major League Update: Estrada gets Toronto past New York Yankees

The following are updates on local Major League Baseball players.

Marco Estrada (Glendale Community College, 2003) Toronto Blue Jays pitcher: Looking to provide a jolt for Toronto, Estrada pitched well on Wednesday and ended a six-week drought in search of a victory, in the process.

Estrada, a former All-Western State Conference selection at Glendale college, gave up three runs on four hits in seven innings to help Toronto record an 8-4 victory on the road against the New York Yankees.

Estrada, a right-hander, improved to 2-2 and picked up his first win since April 10. He struck out two, walked four and surrendered a pair of home runs.

Estrada escaped a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the third, allowing just one run before Toronto regrouped.

In his previous appearance against the host Minnesota Twins on May 19, Estrada, a Long Beach State product, yielded three hits and two runs (one earned) and struck out nine in eight innings. However, he didn’t factor in the decision.

In nine appearances, he’s struck out 52 and walked 23 over 58 2/3 innings. Estrada has allowed 20 runs (18 earned) and 39 hits.

Toronto is 23-25 and in fourth place in the American League’s East Division through Wednesday.

Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) Colorado Rockies pitcher: It’s been a tough stretch physically for Bergman, a Glendale native. The former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday after suffering a strained left oblique.

Bergman was injured May 19 while pitching against the host St. Louis Cardinals.

In nine games, Bergman is 1-3 with a 5.89 earned-run average.

According to Bergman, it was the first time he sustained an oblique injury.

“I couldn’t get anything tonight glove-side. It was really pretty painful,” Bergman, a right-hander, told the Denver Post. “That’s why it’s kind of strange to me. I threw off the mound before the game today and didn’t feel anything. I got loose — then it came out of nowhere.”

In 18 1/3 innings, he’s struck out 19 and walked four. He’s surrendered 12 runs (all earned) and 25 hits.

Colorado is 21-24 and in third place in the National League’s West Division through Wednesday.

Cesar Ramos (La Crescenta resident) Texas Rangers pitcher: Ramos, a left-hander who began the season in the minor leagues, picked up his first victory with Texas in his last appearance. The starter, who served as a reliever last season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, recorded a quality start on the road against the Houston Astros on Saturday. Ramos went six innings, allowing one run on two hits in Texas’ 2-1 victory.

Ramos who was called up by the Rangers on April 25, struck out four and walked one during an 80-pitch effort.

“I just have to mix up my stuff,” Ramos told the Associated Press. “I don’t have that power arm ... that we have in the back end of our pen or the whole bullpen. But they did a great job.”

Houston Manager A.J. Hinch said Ramos kept the Astros off balance.

“Ramos mixed and matched and threw different speeds and different pitches and never really doubled up on anything the entire night,” Hinch said. “It was too much for us tonight, apparently.”

In five appearances, Ramos is 1-2 with a 3.57 earned-run average. He’s struck out 15, walked nine and yielded nine runs (all earned) on 24 hits in 22 2/3 innings.

Through Wednesday, Texas is 27-20 and in second place in the American League West Division.
