Minor League Update: Olmedo-Barrera stays hot at plate with Hot Rods

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level.

David Olmedo-Barrera (St. Francis High, 2012) Bowling Green Hot Rods outfielder: Olmedo-Barrera continues to be a force for Bowling Green, the single-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Entering Thursday’s road game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, Olmedo-Barrera, 22, had a seven-game hitting streak. In that stretch, Olmedo-Barrera, a former All-Mission League and All-Area selection, registered four two-hit games.

Olmedo-Barrera, a Cal State Fullerton product, extended his hitting streak Tuesday with a single in the second inning in Bowling Green’s 5-2 home win against the West Michigan Whitecaps. He had a double in the seventh in a 3-2 home win in 12 innings against West Michigan on Monday.

Olmedo-Barrera’s last multiple-hit contest came Saturday against West Michigan. He had a run-scoring single in the fourth and added a bunt single in the eighth to help Bowling Green earn a 7-3 victory. Olmedo-Barrera, who was drafted in 2015 after helping Fullerton advance to the NCAA World Series, also scored a run in the fourth.

Through Tuesday, Olmedo-Barrera was batting .307 (55 for 179) with 13 doubles, five home runs and 29 runs batted in. He’s scored 30 runs and stolen 11 bases.

Bowling Green was 30-14 and in first place in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division.

Alonzo Gonzalez (Glendale Community College, 2011) New Hampshire Fisher Cats pitcher: Gonzalez was promoted to the Toronto Blue Jays’ double-A affiliate Tuesday after beginning the season with the class-A advanced Blue Jays of Dunedin.

Gonzalez, a left-hander, made his first appearance with New Hampshire in relief on Wednesday. He had a rough outing, giving up two runs (both earned), one hit and two walks in the Fisher Cats’ 7-4 road win against the Bowie Baysox.

Before arriving in New Hampshire, Gonzalez was 6-5 with a 2.48 earned-run average. Gonzalez, 24, struck out 55 in 58 innings at Dunedin.

His last performance at Dunedin resulted in a loss in relief. He allowed one run on one hit and walked one in Dunedin’s 7-6 road defeat against the Clerawater Threshers on Aug. 4.

New Hampshire was 54-61 and in fifth place in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division entering Thursday’s game against Bowie.

Cesar Ramos (La Crescenta resident) Toledo Mud Hens pitcher: Ramos is with his second minor league team this season after joining Toledo, the triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, on Aug. 4. The left-hander was assigned to Toledo after he was released by the Texas Rangers on July 25. Ramos, 32, spent nearly three months with Texas after beginning the season with the Round Rock Express.

Since arriving at Toledo, Ramos has made three appearances. Ramos’ last outing came Wednesday against the visiting Columbus Clippers. He started, yielding four runs (all earned) on five hits and took the loss in a 7-5 defeat. Ramos struck out five in three innings. He made 46 pitches, 31 for strikes.

Ramos, who played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last season, tossed a scoreless inning in relief in his previous effort Sunday. He allowed one hit and struck out one in Toledo’s 6-1 road win against the Indianapolis Indians.

Ramos’ first appearance with the Mud Hens came Aug. 4 versus the host Louisville Bats. Ramos, a Long Beach State product, allowed one hit in relief in the eighth in Toledo’s 7-1 win.

Through Wednesday, Ramos was 0-1 with a 7.20 earned-run average with Toledo. In five innings, he’s struck out six and allowed seven hits.

Toledo was 54-65 through Wednesday and in last place in the International League’s West Division.

Brandon Van Horn (St. Francis High, 2011): Arizona League Giants shortstop: Van Horn has recorded a hit in three consecutive games for the Giants, the Rookie League affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

Van Horn, who was taken in the 19th round (575th overall) by San Francisco in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft in June, began a seven-run fourth inning with a double in the Giants’ 8-7 win against the Indians on Wednesday. He also notched a single to help the Giants post a 7-3 road victory against the Dodgers on Monday.

Entering Thursday’s home game against the Angels, Van Horn was batting .245 (27 for 110) with five doubles, two triples and 11 runs batted in. Van Horn, 22, has stolen five bases and scored 17 runs.

Arizona was 6-5 and in fourth place in the league’s East Division.
