Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College baseball off to phenomenal 4-0 start

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 11, Oxnard College 8: The Vaqueros continued their torrid start to the season and brought their success to Stengel Field, winning their home opener on Tuesday in nonconference play.

On Saturday, Glendale’s offense was in full effect, as it won its third straight road game to start the season, 14-4, against Mount San Antonio College.

GCC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Mt. SAC eventually caught up at 4-4 in the sixth before the Vaqueros scored the game-winning run in the seventh and exploded for nine runs in the eighth.

Mondo Rodriguez had a huge game, going three for five with five runs batted in and a run scored. Chris Colarossi had two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk, while Frank Garriola also scored twice and drove in a run. Jake Zahorik had three runs on two walks and a hit and Seiji Kusakariba had two runs on two walks and a hit. Troy Mulcahey had a run and an RBI, as well.

Ryan Losman got the start and threw four innings, allowing two hits, one unearned run and struck out three against two walks.

Angel Lerma, Felix Rubi, Calvin Christinsen, Kamalu Neal and Joe Torres all had scoreless relief, with Torres closing out the game with two scoreless inning in which he allowed two hits and struck out two.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College 8, Oxnard College 2: GCC overcame a pair of one-run deficits by scoring seven runs over the final three innings in Tuesday’s nonconference win on the road.

Glendale is 2-3-1.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 5, Irvine Valley College 4: The Vaqueros edged out a nonconference win on Tuesday afternoon and evened its record at 3-3.

GCC turned the match in its favor by winning two of three doubles sets, as Meredy Gharabegi and Viktoriya Shumakova won, 8-6, and Veronika Galstyan and Tsukimi Ono prevailed, 8-2. Gharabegi, Ono and Galstyan also won in singles in straight sets.

MEN’S TENNIS

Cerritos College 9, Glendale Community College 0: Glendale dropped a nonconference home match Tuesday. The Vaqueros are 2-1.

MEN’S GOLF

Glendale Community College in Western State Conference match: The Vaqueros began their season Monday at the Valencia Country Club with a seventh-place finish in the event

Glendale carded a 476 and received a seven-over-par 79 from Nick Diaz.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 71, Muir 10: The Falcons locked up second place in the Pacific League with an easy victory Tuesday evening.

Alisa Shinn led the Falcons (18-9, 11-2) with 19 points, while Caitlyn Jabourian added 13 points, six steals and six assists.

Crescenta Valley closes the season at rival Arcadia on Thursday.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 69, Immaculate Heart 41: Flintridge Sacred Heart clinch second in the Sunshine League following Tuesday’s road win.

The Tologs improved to 19-7, 6-2 in league. Jenna Tran and Casey Johnson had 19 points apiece for the Tologs

Flintridge Prep 42, Firebaugh 25: The Rebels earned a Prep League home victory Tuesday. Flintridge Prep (15-4, 11-1 in league) got eight points each from Tala Ismail and Alison Fujimoto.

Mayfield 47, St. Monica Academy 44: Visiting St. Monica (12-5) got 14 points from Molly Hagen and 10 from Kayla Grimm on Tuesday in a nonleague contest.

Pasadena 47, Hoover 43: Aleek Derbedrosian finished with 14 points and Mikaela Mauricio added 10 on Tuesday for the host Tornadoes in a Pacific League game. Hoover dropped to 6-18, 3-10 in league.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 75, Firebaugh 48: Dante Fregoso collected 21 points and Andrew Tsangeos added 17 on Tuesday to spur the host Rebels in a Prep League contest.

Flintridge Prep (17-4, 8-0 in league) received nine points from Jacob Brawer and eight from Jake Althouse.

Burroughs 71, Glendale 56: The Nitros lost at home on Tuesday in a Pacific League contest.

Glendale dropped to 9-17, 2-11 with its fourth straight loss.

Pasadena 79, Hoover 37: The Tornadoes dropped a Pacific League road game Tuesday. Hoover fell to 6-19, 3-10 in league.

St. Monica Academy 57, Southwestern 51: The Crusaders picked up an upset road victory over International League-leading Southwestern on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Crusaders improved to 8-13, 4-3 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 1, Firebaugh 0: Ben Ventresca had a goal and goalkeeper Hamilton Evans finished with seven saves Tuesday for the host Rebels in a Prep League match at St. Francis High.

Flintridge Prep improved to 10-4-2, 2-3 in league.

St. Francis 2, Chaminade 1: The visiting Golden Knights scored two goals in the final five minutes to earn a Mission League road victory.

St. Francis (5-8-5, 3-4-4 in league) got one goal apiece from Mateo Ramirez and Christian Ibarra.

Heading into Wednesday’s league finale against Alemany, the Golden Knights’ 13 points has them in third place in the seven-team league, one point ahead of Notre Dame and two points ahead of Harvard-Westlake and Chaminade.

Pasadena 2, Hoover 1: The Tornadoes lost a critical Pacific League game on Tuesday on the road and have now lost three in a row.

With its league finale left on Thursday against Glendale, Hoover (9-9-3, 5-7-1 in league) is in sixth place in league with 16 points. Burbank is in fourth with 19 points and Crescenta Valley is in fifth with 18. The top four finishers in league are guaranteed a playoff berth.

Burroughs 6, Glendale 1: The Nitros suffered a lopsided at home in Pacific League action.

Glendale, which has lost three in a row, is now 2-8-3 in league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley def. Muir via forfeit: The Falcons improved to 12-5, 12-1 in the Pacific League with Tuesday’s forfeit victory.

CV is now poised to take on Arcadia (12-1 in league) at home Thursday for the Pacific League title.

Pasadena 4, Hoover 3: Remi Miller had two goals and an assist on Tuesday in a Pacific Loss at home.

Emily Sawitskas had a goal and Ninette Simonian added an assist for Hoover (3-15-3, 2-11).

Burroughs 4, Glendale 0: The Nitros lost on the road Tuesday, dropping to 7-12-1, 5-8 in Pacific League.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 7, Louisville 2F: The Tologs advanced to the Mission League semifinals with Tuesday’s win at Harvard-Westlake in the opening round of the tournament.

Emily Gray and Lana Sarkisian had two goals apiece for the Tologs.

Fourth-seeded FSHA (17-9, 4-3 in league) will play top-seeded Harvard-Westlake, which had a first-round bye, on Wednesday in the semifinals at 3 p.m.

Hoover 9, Pasadena 8: Hoover got two goals each from lalageh Noubarentz, Sona Aghasaryan and Diana Magdesian on Tuesday in a consolation match of the Pacific League Tournament at Burbank High.

The Tornadoes (2-5 in league) will play Burbank on Thursday.
