Estes, Althouse grab All-CIF accolades in boys’ basketball

Plenty was expected of Sean Estes and Jake Althouse throughout the season.

Estes and Althouse met or exceeded those expectations for the La Cañada High and Flintridge Prep boys’ basketball teams, respectively.

For their contributions, which included leading their teams to the CIF Southern Section playoffs, Estes and Althouse earned All-CIF first-teams nods Monday. Estes picked up Division I-A accolades and Althouse received Division IV-AA honors.

Justin Kouyoumdjian of La Cañada secured second-team recognition.

Estes proved to be a pillar at both ends of the court for La Cañada, which won the Rio Hondo League championship. He averaged 20 points and six rebounds a game for the Spartans, who reached the Division I-A quarterfinals. The Spartans (25-5, 10-0 in league) picked up a playoff win against San Clemente before losing to Loyola.

“It’s really a great accomplishment,” La Cañada Coach Tom Hofman said. “It just shows how far he’s come over the last four years.

“He showed he could play with many of the top players in our league and the division. He’s deserving of that.”

Althouse, a senior forward, registered 17.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Flintridge Prep took second in the Prep League behind rival Pasadena Poly. Flintridge Prep (12-9, 6-2) began the postseason with a win against Quartz Hill before succumbing to second-seeded Blair.

“He did so many things well,” Flintridge Prep Coach Garrett Ohara said. “He knew how to grab the big rebounds and make clutch shots.

“I think the team felt confident around him.”

Kouyoumdjian, a senior guard, contributed 18 points, four assists and two steals per game.
