Tri-Cities 8-10 softball ousted in Section 2 Tournament

After opening the Section 2 Tournament with a victory, the Burbank-Foothill-Jewel City 8-10 Little League All-Stars softball team couldn’t extend its momentum.

That ultimately led to the Tri-Cities squad seeing its season come to a close Sunday following a 14-0 defeat against San Marino National at Quartz Hill Little League Fields in the double-elimination tournament.

Burbank-Foothill-Jewel City, the District 16 representative , managed just three hits Sunday. Olivia Orozco had two hits for Burbank-Foothill-Jewel City, which got one hit from Jasmine Combs. Orozco had a single and a double and Combs collected a double.

San Marino National captured the District 17 crown.

“We started off well with our hitting and pitching and then I think we just ran out of gas,” said Burbank-Foothill-Jewel City manager Peter Orozco, whose team began the tournament Friday with a 13-1 win against Canyon Country (District 40) before suffering a 13-3 defeat to Quartz Hill (District 51) on Saturday. “We hit the ball well Friday and we were pitching well, but then things started to go the other way starting Saturday.

“We started leaving some pitches over the plate and the other teams started hitting them hard everywhere. We got this far and it was a great learning experience. That’s one of the reasons I love coaching Little League so much.”

Olivia Orozco finished the four-team tournament with a team-leading eight hits.

“It was a great atmosphere up there and it will be good for our players to draw from it when they come back next year,” Peter Orozco said.
