St. Monica Academy athletics announces league honors

An athletic tradition at St. Monica Academy is the season-ending announcement of all-league awards for fall, winter and spring sports, which are kept secret until the conclusion of the school year and banquet.

With all of St. Monica’s teams having completed their respective seasons, Crusaders athletic director Darren Bradley released all the league honor lists for each season. Here are the honorees from fall and winter.

The winning continued for the girls’ volleyball team, which won its eighth straight International League crown while elongating its league-match winning streak to 68 consecutive victories.

St. Monica finished 18-8 and 10-0 in league as senior outside hitter Molly Hagan was named the International League Most Valuable Player.

Sophomore middle hitter Grace Brady was selected to the league’s first team, while freshman outside hitter Katie Golbranson and sophomore opposite Anna Urrea were named to the second team.

Hagan continued an amazing streak of winning league MVPs by capturing her third overall and second straight in girls’ basketball.

Hagan averaged 14.1 points per game at shooting guard for the Crusaders as she was named the league MVP. St. Monica finished 14-10 and 10-0 in the International League in winning the crown.

Senior guard Hannah Acosta, a league second-team pick last season, moved up to the first team after averaging 10.1 points per game. Senior forward Brigit Grimm was selected to the first team after averaging 5.2 points a game, while sophomore center Kristina Turicchi was a second-team choice who averaged 5.5 points a game.

In boys’ basketball, St. Monica finished 7-15 and 5-7 in league to tie for sixth.

Sophomore forward Charlie Boles nabbed a league first-team honor, while senior forward Jacob Lessard was placed on the league second team.

As for girls’ soccer, St. Monica competed in the Heritage League and placed third with a 7-5-2 overall mark and 6-2-1 record in league. The team also advanced to the postseason for the first time in program history.

Sophomore striker Deanelly Gonzales was named to the league first team, while the Crusaders boasted two league second-team picks in junior midfielder Veronica Eckart and sophomore forward Urrea.

Crusaders grab league recognition

Two members of the St. Monica Academy boys’ volleyball team picked up All-International league honors after the Crusaders finished 4-9, 1-7 in league.

Senior outside hitter Michael Grumbine received first-team honors.

“He was our lone senior and he was an outstanding defender and he knew how to put the ball away,” St. Monica coach Owen Keenan said.

Nicholas Matranga, a junior setter, earned a second-team nod.
