Huh cools down after fast start

Crescenta Valley High alumnus John Huh created quite a stir when he took the lead after the first day of play in the Barracuda Golf Championship at Montreaux Golf and Country Club in Reno on Thursday.

Unfortunately for Huh, the momentum didn’t last as Chris Stroud won the tournament with a score of 44 points using the modified Stableford format, which awards points for eagles and birdies and subtracts for bogeys and worse.

Huh finished in a five-way tie for 37th with a final score of 27 points over the four-day tournament.

On Thursday, Huh utilized 24 putts to finish with a score of 15 points, which gave him the lead.

“Twenty-four putts is always nice. That was the key to make a few birdies,” Huh told the Associated Press after the first round. “Hopefully, I can do it the next three days.”

Huh followed that effort with one point on Friday, eight points on Saturday and three points on Sunday’s final day.

Estrada still looking to get back into win column

It has been a trying and unsuccessful stretch for Glendale Community College product and current Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marco Estrada.

Estrada, 34, a right-hander, is in the midst of string where he hasn’t recorded a win in his last 12 starts. His last victory came on May 27 against the Texas Rangers. During the skid Estrada has a 0-5 record.

In his last outing Saturday against the Houston Astros, Estrada pitched well and deep into the game, but got a no-decision in a 4-3 victory by Toronto in 10 innings.

Estrada worked seven innings and held the Astros to five hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out seven.

In 23 starts this season, Estrada is 4-7 with a 5.12 earned-run average over 128 1/3 innings. He has struck out 134, walked 53 and given up 73 runs, all earned.
