Sports Briefs: Glendale Community College football draws league accolades

Vaqueros earn all-league honors

Seven members of the Glendale Community College football team were bestowed with All-American Metro League honors after the Vaqueros finished 2-8, 2-4 in conference for fifth place.

Paving the way on the first-team defense were sophomore linebacker Rashad Ysaquirre and freshman linebacker Teddy Gallagher.

Ysaguirre finished with a team-leading 55 tackles.

“He made a lot of big plays and we knew we could always count on him to lead the way for our young team,” Glendale college coach John Rome said.

Gallagher collected 44 tackles and two sacks.

“He did so many good things throughout the year and we’re excited about bringing him back,” Rome said.

Randall Mincy, Pileak Sun and Guadalupe Arevalos were named to the second-team offense.

Mincy, a sophomore tight end, caught 32 passes for 395 yards and four touchdowns.

Sun, a freshman running back, had 90 carries for 404 yards.

Arevalos, a sophomore, excelled as a lineman.

Daniel Gutierrez and Michael Selsor were tabbed to the second-team defense.

Gutierrez, a sophomore tackle, finished with 34 tackles and three sacks.

Selsor, a sophomore punter/kicker, made two field goals and converted six of nine extra-point attempts. Selsor also had 63 punts for 2,322 yards, an average of 36.8 yards per punt. Twenty-two punts landed inside the 20-yard line.

Christmas golf tournament upcoming

The Senior Men’s Christmas Golf Tournament, hosted by Scholl Canyon Men’s Golf Club, will be held Dec. 16 at Scholl Canyon Golf Course, 3800 E. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale.

The cost is $35 per person. Check in at 6:30 a.m., followed by tee off at 7.

New golfers invited. Cans of food being accepted for local food bank.

Volleyball league in Glendale

The United States Youth Volleyball League will hold registration for the 2018 spring season in Glendale. The program is geared for boys and girls, ages 7-15.

The eight-week developmental league will run twice a week and will cover basic skills. The league will run April 4 through June 2 at Maple Park, 820 E. Maple St., Glendale.

Practices will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and games will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays.

Fall ball clinics being held

The Crescenta Valley High baseball team is conducting fall ball clinics on Wednesdays at Stengel Field in Glendale.

A session for ages 7-9 will be held at 5 p.m., followed by a session for those 10-12 at 6.

The cost is $5 per person.

Annual Hoop Shoot competition

Glendale Elks Lodge No. 1289 invites all girls and boys, ages 8-13, to participate in its annual “Hoop Shoot” basketball competition at 8 a.m. Dec. 9 at Hoover High’s gymnasium, 651 Glenwood Road, Glendale.

The competition is open to all students from public and private schools in the Glendale area. Winners who qualify will go on to represent their schools at district, regional, state and national competitions.

Falcons Winter Baseball Camp

The 22nd annual Falcons Winter Baseball Camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 27-28 at Stengel Field in Glendale.

The camp, conducted by Crescenta Valley baseball coach Phil Torres, will focus on hitting, pitching and more. The cost is $75 per person.

The event is geared for ages 7-13 during the 2017-18 school year.
