With David Komjathy and Hakop Artsvelian paving the way, the Crescenta Valley High boys’ water polo team was able to challenge for the Pacific League championship and qualify for the playoffs.

Komjathy proved to be a bona fide scoring threat while Artsvelian served as a top-notch goalkeeper for the talented Falcons.

Komjathy and Artsvelian were recognized for their significant contributions, as the duo was bestowed with All-CIF Southern Section Division IV recognition Monday when the CIF office released the teams for all seven divisions.

Komjathy, a senior driver, collected 85 goals to receive first-team accolades. He added 55 steals and 22 assists to spur the Falcons (21-7, 6-2 in league for third place).

“He’s deserving of the honor,” said Crescenta Valley coach Jan Sakonju, whose team fell in the first round of the playoffs to Xavier Prep. “He’s one of the best players in the division and it’s a recognition of his ability.

“David had great offensive and defensive skills that always put him in position to succeed.”

Artsvelian, a senior, registered 263 saves and 15 steals while adding to the long list of Crescenta Valley goalkeepers to garner All-CIF recognition. He was a third-team recipient.

“He’s right up there with a lot of the other goalies in the division,” Sakonju said. “There are so many talented goalies within our division.

“Hakop has come on the last two years with us and proven to be very reliable.”

Blake Vogelsang of Redondo Union was tabbed the division’s player of the year. Redondo Union defeated Walnut to win the CIF championship in Irvine.
