Miscues keep Glendale Community College football winless

PASADENA – A record-breaking evening for the Pasadena City College football team equaled another loss for Glendale Community College on Saturday evening.

The visiting Vaqueros surrendered the game’s final 24 points after pulling within seven and fell, 38-7, in American Metro League action at Robinson Stadium.

The defeat is the eighth in a row for Glendale (0-7, 0-3), which will look for victory No. 1 at Compton College next Saturday.

Glendale struggled against Pasadena City (4-3, 3-0), which picked off four passes by two quarterbacks Saturday evening to add to its state-leading total of interceptions, which is now 18.

One team’s frustration was another team’s elation as the Lancers set new school records for longest touchdown pass – 99 yards from Adam Besana to Ryan Kotey – and for longest field goal, a 50-yarder from Enrique Lozano.

“It’s always great to help another team set a school record,” Glendale coach John Rome quipped. “It’s very frustrating because when you look at the film and you see the mismatches we created and it’s just about not being able to execute. It’s just one breakdown after another. It’s very frustrating.”

Glendale starting quarterback Guy Gibbs showed an ability to move the ball and connected on 16 of 25 passes for 179 yards. However, to Rome’s point, the former Burbank High star was also intercepted three times, twice in Pasadena territory.

Glendale took a bit of momentum into halftime as Gibbs led the Vaqueros on an 82-yard drive capped on a 11-yard touchdown pass to Randall Mincy with 16 seconds left in the first half.

A play before, Gibbs and Mincy hooked up on a 34-yard pass to get into the red zone.

“It was crazy,” said Mincy, who finished with three catches for 72 yards and one touchdown. “We called a high-low concept over the middle and I actually got jammed up on my route and I just saw a guy come off of his first read and I just broke deep because that’s what we’re taught to do.”

The touchdown, coupled with an extra point, brought Glendale to within 14-7 at the break.

The good vibes from the score did not last long.

Pasadena’s Kimani Williams intercepted a pass at the PCC 42-yard line with 10:28 left in the third quarter.

The turnover was cashed in on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Pasadena starting quarterback Mario Bobadilla (15 of 24 for 165 yards and two touchdowns) to former Burbank High standout Forest Fajardo, which, after a point-after, put Pasadena up, 21-7.

The score opened up the floodgates for Pasadena, which added Lozano’s 50-yard field goal after another interception, from Jared Henry, as the Lancers led, 31-7, after three quarters.

Pasadena put the game away with its school-record touchdown followed by an interception from Steven Cantero of Glendale back-up Donovan Martinez with two minutes left in the game.

If there was a bright spot for Glendale, it was kick returner Jonathan Cobos.

The sophomore receiver returned a ball 60 yards to the Lancers’ 39 on Glendale’s second possession. Glendale didn’t take advantage, though, as Mikey Selsor was just wide on a 31-yard field goal try.

Two possessions later, Cobos returned a kickoff 90 yards only to see the play negated on a holding call.

Glendale linebacker Rashad Ysaguirre led his team with nine tackles.

“What I liked about our team is that we didn’t give up,” Rome said. “That’s the positive. We keep fighting no matter what the score is.”
